Word of the Day: impregnable

dimanche 31 août 2014

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 01, 2014 is:

impregnable • \im-PREG-nuh-bul\ • adjective

1 : incapable of being taken by $#@!ault : unconquerable 2 : unassailable; also : impenetrable

Examples:

"The castle was built on the corner of a great rock, so that on three sides it was quite impregnable…." — Bram Stoker, Dracula, 1897

"He is too generous in his $#@!essment of Lee's disastrous frontal attacks at the Battle of Malvern Hill that capped the Seven Days campaign, and his equally futile $#@!ault—now famous as Pickett's Charge—on another impregnable federal position at Gettysburg, in 1863." — Fergus M. Bordewich, The New York Times, June 29, 2014

Did you know?

Since the days when the Norman French ruled England, English-speakers have been captured by the allure of French terms. Impregnable is one of the many English words that bear a French ancestry. It derives from the Middle French verb prendre, which means "to take or capture." Combining prendre with various prefixes has given our language many other words, too, including surprise, reprise and enterprise.

New pit momma!

Hi everyone! I just got my first pit Friday and I am very excited. I don't know anyone with pits and stumbled on this forum when I was online and decided I should check it out. I do have some concerns they gave her away at only 4 weeks old and aside from replacer milk didn't know if there was anything else I should be looking out for?

New ones of Sako!

Sako is my "go to" whenever I find a new photo shoot spot because I know he'll be good since he loves to model. I plan on doing a lot of my show dog shoots at this spot, it's super nice and not too far from my house, big plus!

I don't think I ever posted these either. Another new spot I found.

For everyone who has missed Wilson..

Here you go :) I just had him here for 3wks. while my parents were out of town, so I took him out for some pictures. He's 5 1/2yrs. now and I can't get over how grey his face is!

SO wish I had nailed the focus on his eyes instead of his nose for this one, but my hand hurt (my camera is a beast) and I was trying hard to get him to head tilt by making noises and such. So whatever.

Little bit of Dock Diving

There's a very nice local club under an hour from me, so Scheme and I have been playing around w/Dock Dogs. We've been to 3 events, Scheme has had a lot of fun. She doesn't track the ball and jump upwards (yet?), just runs and jumps flat out. Her distances have been pretty small, between 11 feet and 16 feet, but I've been able to move her back to about 20" on the dock. Today she jumped in 4 waves, ranging between about 12 to 15 feet. She got two Junior legs and 2 Senior legs, so she wound up earning both those titles (I think).

My male APBT has 1 giant nipple!

My dog is about 3 years old. I raised him since he was a pup. Last several months, one of his nipples has gotten huge, almost the size of my fingertip! Has anyone has this issue? I feed him Blue Buffalo grain free dog food and also feed him fresh, boiled Yellowfin tuna. I do admit I give him some of my table scraps, like pizza or a bite of my hamburger.

He also has a decent sized mole/growth on the side of his weinie. Is that a cause for concern too?

What Happened to XDream Dogs?

This was going to be my new collar go-to place, and I never get a response back, nothing from them. I placed an order for Perry Mason for a puppy collar (which he doesn't need now) and they never sent me the paypal amount. They claimed they did, but it never showed in my account. I haven't heard from them since, despite sending them a few messages asking them if they are accepting orders.

Damnit, I love their collars!!

Dremeling nails

I just started using a Dremel to take care Mercy's nails last week. So far, so good! I love it. She's so much more calm with the Dremel rather than guillotine clippers, it's easier in general. But what I'd like to see is possible pictures of your dog's nails, what you like to aim for, how often you dremel them, etc.

Please and thank you!

Word of the Day: permutation

samedi 30 août 2014

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 31, 2014 is:

permutation • \per-myoo-TAY-shun\ • noun

1 : often major or fundamental change (as in character or condition) based primarily on rearrangement of existent elements; also : a form or variety resulting from such change 2 a : the act or process of changing the lineal order of an ordered set of objects b : an ordered arrangement of a set of objects

Examples:

The policy went through a number of permutations before the committee settled on its final version.

"There are grilled cheeses with pierogi, hamburger patties, jerk shrimp and crabmeat. They use gouda, beer cheese, buffalo mozzarella and provolone. The permutations are potentially limitless." — Dan Gigler, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, July 31, 2014

Did you know?

Permutation has not changed all that much since it was borrowed into Middle English from Anglo-French in the 14th century as permutacioun, meaning "exchange, transformation." Permutacioun traces back to the Latin verb permutare, meaning "to change thoroughly, exchange," and ultimately derives from the Latin mutare, "to change." Other descendants of mutare in English include commute, mutant, and mutual. Permutation also has a specific application in the field of mathematics relating to the ordering of a given set of objects. For example, permutations of items a, b, and c are abc, acb, bac, etc.

Shianne - NAFA Cover Dog

I don't think I ever posted here because this came out several years ago. Shianne was a North American Flyball $#@!ociation Cover Dog on their website :)

December, 2009
Shianne

Shianne is one of the few APBT's running flyball. Shianne was rescued by Debra Young and Sonny Ganges at 3 wks of age and is now 3 yrs old. She came from a shaddy background that would have left her with a dim future. She was bottled feed and nursed into a healthy little girl with lots of energy and an obsession for tennis balls. When Shianne and Debby found flyball they were hooked. Shianne began training in 2007 with Revolution Flyball, region 15. She learned the sport quickly and loves it!! Shianne's favorite things are playing chuck it, swimming (she is also a dock diving dog), and carrying around her blanket that she likes to nurse on. Shianne has her FMX, is handled by Debra Young, and runs between 4.1 - 4.3. Shianne, along with the other pitbulls who run, are ambassador's of their breed. Photo by Swift-Bennett Photography.

Newbie

I look forward to being a part of your site

How would you handle this situation?

Hey everyone, I moved back to school into an apartment with two roommates this past week. I brought Adonis and one of my roommates brought her $#@!er Spaniel mix, Annie. Adonis has been great, adjusting amazingly actually. He's doing great with my roommates, he's practically in love with Annie's owner. He met my boyfriend who's 6'4" and normally anyone over 5'5" would scare the crap out of him and he'd go into "stay the hell away from me" mode, but in 10 minutes time he was allowing him to touch him. Adonis has been making huge strides with his fears lately and I'm super proud of him.

Well the problem came once we introduced Adonis and Annie, both on leash. Adonis was very polite, staying next to me and sniffing in her direction without getting in her space. I could tell she wasn't comfortable so I removed him before she tried to bite. My roommate went home and took her along for about a week so Adonis got to play only child for a little bit. He's used to having my father's/my dog Adore to play with at all times so he was obviously bored and lonely.

When my roommate came back, I was hoping she'd bring one of her other less hostile dogs but she brought Annie again. Well we tried another introduction and again Adonis was trying to be polite but Annie wanted none of it, growling and baring her teeth at him. Well Adonis fell in love with my roommate, Annie's owner, and the feeling was apparently mutual. He's been drooling over her all week and whenever he gets close to her Annie growls. It's gotten to the point where Annie has physically charged him twice and made contact once (didn't break skin, but scared the $#@! out of Adonis and everyone else in the room).

He now stays far away from her and only plays with my roommate if Annie is asleep or not within biting distance. I've been keeping Adonis on his leash in the house in case Annie acts up, which isn't fair at all since she's the aggressor but he's so much bigger if he reacts to her she could get hurt. I'm trying to be responsible here, I keep him locked I'm my room when we aren't home, I don't let him near her when she's off leash (all the time up until she made contact) and I watch them like a hawk when they're close. I don't know what I should do other than that. I feel like if anything happens it'll be my fault, they'll automatically blame Adonis for hurting Annie since she's so small. I don't think he'd hurt her, he mostly just runs away, but no one does until it happens. I guess I just want to know the thoughts of some more experienced owners and maybe a bit of reassurance that I'm doing everything that can be done right now.

By the way Adonis will be one year old in September and for a neutered rescue mutt he's starting to fill out nicely :)
