Word of the Day: ambient

samedi 31 janvier 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 01, 2015 is:

ambient • \AM-bee-unt\ • adjective

: existing or present on all sides : encompassing 2 of electronic music : quiet and relaxing with melodies that repeat many times

Examples:

The chemicals must be kept at an ambient temperature of 70 degrees.

"Liz Harris summons a wounded sound that suggests that ambient music, despite its intangibility, should be memorable." — The Washington Post, December 28, 2014

Did you know?

Biologists explore the effects of ambient light on plants; acoustics experts try to control ambient sound; and meteorologists study ambient pressure, air, or temperature. All this can make ambient seem like a technical term, but when it first saw light of day, that all-encompassing adjective was as likely to be used in poetry as in science. John Milton used it in Paradise Lost, and Alexander Pope wrote of a mountain "whose tow'ring summit ambient clouds conceal'd." Both poets and scientists who use ambient owe a debt to the Latin verb ambire, meaning "to go around," the grandparent of our English word.

Skin Infection/Allergies

Hello everybody, my name is Rylee I have a three year old American Terrier Pit Bull named Lily. From about 10 months to now she has been getting what my vet calls "bacterial infections". When I take her to the vet I am given antibiotics and instructions to give her them until it is gone. This always clears it up, but never gets rid of the problem completely. It will come back 2-3 months later. I have tried hypoallergenic shampoo, special food and recently coconut oil. I thought maybe trying just coconut oil would help but I ended up giving her antibiotics because nothing really changed in a weeks time. I am tired of giving her pills I don't think it is fair to her. I live in a small area and the vets are mostly specialized in large animals. I am wondering if anyone has seen this before or has any advice for me. I would really appreciate it!

Merle: New or reintroduced?

Hi everyone my name is Stivahr and this is my first time blogging on any site which is fitting because I think I love pitbulls more than most things that I could think of.I love the way a dog smells, how they look, their different characteristics temperment and the list goes on. So I thought it fitting for me to disgust a variation of the same topic that I have seen floating around many pitbull conversations.

She absolutely LOVES to cuddle and give everyone she meets kisses. Although Rabbit is house trained she still has many accidents in the house. I need help on tip on how to wee wee pad train her as well. Can I so it or is she too old to learn to use the wee wee pads?

Hello World

Hi Folks,

My name is Dakar, I'm from South America (Brazil) and I have a loved Amstaff called Rossi. He is 4 months and now I'm buying a new one to be his brother.

This is the first time that I have dogs, but I'm loving it. Not sure if I would like small dogs, but my one is very special. Its a dreame that come true.

He already started lessons with a specialist, but I'm also training him at home with basic stuff (Sit, Come, Stay, laid down, Jump, up and down).

He is smart, but a puppy and when he is in fully attention used to attend and respond to all commands/demands, otherwise, he is just a puppy. lol.

Its a pleasure to meet you all and hope to share experiences.

See ya,

Dakar

Anxious around kids

There's a park I walk Scully at Thats by a playground. Lately Shes been reactive on leash in the sense that she pulls towards stuff more and more lately (never barks or growls THO), when we walked past the kids she was visibly nervous, ears back, ignoring me. She didn't growl but she was high alert darting her eyes around. The park had kids on bikes, running, bouncing balls, so it was super chaotic. But I've also noticed lately her pulling towards kids when they are running when we are on walks. In a way she doesn't do for adults.

What are some suggestions at getting her more relaxed. I'm trying the "click and treat when she sees a kid" trick, but I don't want to put kids in a situation where she might react. Should I have us go across the street and sit?

Corvino and Tacoma Bloodlines

Joe Corvino

Joe Corvino was one of the most famous dogmen in the history of the breed. Joe began his breeding program in the late 1920's, he started from dogs of Feeley, Tudor's and Shipley's lines and also from Armitage x Tonn's crosses. He bred numerous outstanding specimens, his gamedogs played a very important role in the history of the American Staffordshire.

Some of Joe Corvino*s most notable American Pit Bull Terriers were Corvino's Braddock (14xw), Corvino's Shorty, Corvino's Thunder, Corvino's Gimp and

Neblett's Braddock Jr.

Joe Corvino bred National Specialty Winner of 1939, Westminster Winner of 1940 Ch. Sox of Chicago (Corvino's Dick x Corvino's Darky) that was whelped on March the 1st, 1938.

In H. Richard Pascoe*s (The Little Red Book) "The American Staffordshire Terrier" printed in 1977, he mentions that there are five major lines in the foundation of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Tacoma, X-Pert, Ruffian, Crusader, and "California" which is not actually a line, but a combination of line's

John Fonseca on the left, Al Brown of Tacoma Jack fame in the Middle and Howard Heinzel (Colby x Corvino) on the right. The Tacoma line was developed by Charles Doyle of Winamac, Indiana and Al Brown of Modesto, California beginning with the whelping of Grand Champion Brown*s Tacomja Jack (9xw) in 1927. The Tacoma line was influenced by Corvino blood early in its history and was known for its courage and working ability.

Al Brown and Grand Champion Brown's Tacoma Jack (9xw). Jack was born in 1927.

Using Tacoma Jack and Brown*s Judy, Al Brown produced a number of outstanding dogs. Several of these, including Tacoma Jack*s Replica (4xw) were sent to Charles Doyle. Using Tacoma Jack*s Replica and other Tacoma dogs, Charles Doyle produced a long line of sound dogs with the infusion of Corvino*s Braddock (14xw) and Corvinos*s Shorty.

Tacoma Jack's Replica (4xw). Jack's Replica was born in 1936.

Some of the best included Champion Young Joe Braddock, Champion Doyle*s Tacoma Disaster I, Champion Doyle*s Tacoma Disaster II, American Kennel Council Champion Kane Tacoma Blaze, and American Kennel Council Champion Tacoma All-A-Blaze and Champion Tacoma Frivolous Sal, owned by Howard and Janice Hadley, who won the National Specialty in 1954. Subsequently Tacoma crosses have been important in all other major American Staffordshire Terrier lines.

Mr. Doyle, who was active in the National Club both as a board member and long-time Secretary, strongly believed in keeping the American Staffordshire Terrier as game and functional as possible. Of all the American Staffordshire Terrier lines, the Tacoma dogs have easily the most outstanding record for courage and capability.

This is a photo of United Kennel Club Champion Sagebrush Tacoma Danni an in-bred Tacoma American Staffordshire Terrier. This is a link to some additional photos of Sagebrush Tacoma Danni.

This is a photo of Sagebrush Tacoma Danni*s daughter, Sagebrush Retrospect. "Boca" is a Tacoma/Ruffian cross.

This is another photo of Sagebrush Tacoma Danni*s progeny, Retro*s If You Have To Ask. “Grim” is a fine example of a line-bred Tacoma/Ruffian American Staffordshire Terrier. I would like to thank Al Bincarousky of Esoteric Am Staffs for allowing me to display his photos of “Boca” and “Grim” on our website.

Card's Tacoma Whiskey

I got my first Amstaff in 1978. Before this time I bred functional English Bulldogs that were hell on wheels, and would actually pull down a cow, horse or bull, but had all the health problems of the modern English Bulldogs. In the late seventies, I became aware of a man who had an AKC show dog that had beaten three of Jack Kelly's ( the owner of the Sporting Dog Journal, a dog fighting magazine) in pit contests. This dog, Ironman's KO, was an X-pert bred AmStaff who had beaten the famous show dog, Ch. X-pert Sligo McCarthy twice for best of breed the only two times he was shown, and had won his pit championship. KO was inbred on X-pert Black Susie who was a pure Tacoma bitch obtained by Cliff Ormsby from Pat Bodzinowski, the well known dog fighter from the Chicago area who had Storklind kennels.

I got several of KO's offspring and inbred them for five years. Realizing that KO got his type and temperament from the Tacoma blood, I searched the country for the last of the Tacoma, and in 1984 was fortunate to find a very inbred Storklind bitch, Card's Tacoma Tornado, in Florida from Marsha Woods, inbred on Embry's Watch-It, a pure Storklind/Tacoma dog. At the same time, Wayne Brown from the Dallas area of Texas, agreed to breed his 3/4 Tacoma male Brown's Tacoma Chief, to his 1/2 Tacoma female, Brown's Tacoma Storm, and sold me a male from this breeding, Card's Tacoma Jake. I bred Jake to Tornado, twice, and got six pups the first breeding and one the second. Card's Tacoma Rose was kept from the first breeding, and Card's Tacoma Hurricane was kept from the second.

Tornado was bred later to a double bred KO male that I had selected, but the breedings never took, and the KO blood is now extinct. Rose was sold to Bob Schaeffer in Indiana who bred her to his Schaeffer's Hello Chopper, the only AKC dog to ever win a ADBA pitbull Championship title. Chopper was a blend of Hercules of Harwyn blood and Sooner. A daughter of Rose and Chopper was M&M's Bad Banchee who was a three time pit winner. She was bred back to Brown's Tacoma Chief to produce Tacoma Ivory Lace, which I obtained to use in my breeding program. Hurricane, the male I kept, was a very hard biting game dog. He would bite a moving cars tire and explode it while it was going past!

All of the dogs in my yard have his blood. In the early 90's, David Kealaher in Idaho offered me Dellies Mithril North Star, a female out of Ch Mithril Dellies Ruby City, (a half Tacoma bitch out of Dellie-Woods Old Soldier who was a littermate to my Card's Tacoma Tornado,) and Ch Logues White Rock Ox Bomber (Ch. White Rock Jet Bomber x Brown's Tacoma Storm). Hurricane bred to Tacoma Ivory Lace and to Dellies Mithril North Star is the basic foundation of my current blood. The blood in my yard is about 60-70% Tacoma with the rest a blend of Rolls, Hercules of Harwyn, and X-pert. The original Tacoma was started by Charles Doyle in Indiana and was a blend of Feeley, Tudor's Black Jack and Tacoma Jack.

He later added in the 14xw time pit winner Corvino's Braddock. After his death, his dogs were stolen from his yard at his funeral, but Mike Ferris had a few obtained before Doyle's death. He sold several to Pat Bodzianowski who fought them using false Corvino papers so no one would know of the blood of the dogs he was using. After Pat went to prison for dog fighting, the blood was almost extinct until myself, Carla Restivo, and Bert Rodrigues in Illinois started to resurrect it. The current Tacoma has three major types. The Feeley type, the Hercules type, and the Tacoma type. The Feeley and the Tacoma types are typical of the Tacoma dogs produced until the 1970's when the first outcrosses were made. Ch. Hercules of Harwyn entered into so many of the outcrosses that his type is stamped into the genepool.

The Feeley type is a smaller, usually red, dog that looks much like Tudor's Dibo, who was also a Feeley dog. The Tacoma type is a larger, taller, big headed wide chested type that is very athletic. The Hercules type has a short back, lower legs, cobby body with a shorter face and straight stifles and front. Most of the Tacoma dogs are highly dog aggressive and there are many that are highly protective of their owners and family. One of my favorites, Card's Tacoma Swinging Dick, is the only AmStaff in the US to get a French Ring Brevet.

The modern Tacoma dogs are highly intelligent and very willing to work, but because of the dog aggressiveness shouldn't be in a show ring or Obedience ring. My current male, Card and Maio's Tacoma 100 Proof, is not as dog aggressive as most I've had, so I'm going to try him this summer in AKC competition. Of the old Tacoma dogs, Tacoma Jack's Replica, Ch. Tacoma Dispatcher 1, Ch. Tacoma Dispatcher 2, Ch. Tacoma All-A-Blaze, Doyle's American Gangbuster, and Storklinds Otis would be my favorites. My own favorites from my breeding would be Card's Tacoma Hurricane, Card's Tacoma Bandit, Card's Tacoma Knight Templar, Card's Tacoma Soldier and Card's Tacoma Swinging Dick for males and Card's Tacoma Ginger and Card's Tacoma Pride of Joliet for females.

Ch. Scott*s Benny Da Bull is a good example of Tacoma cross White Rock bloodlines.

Since 1999 I have been working to combine the best of the White Rock and Tacoma Lines - My only goal is to produce SOUND dogs. I am not as concerned as some of my peers with perfect top lines, tail sets, etc my main goal is to produce dogs that are of sound mind and body. Once you own a sound dog regardless of breed it truly impacts your view on dogs. As a father of two small girls, I can not stress enough the importance of producing dogs of Sound temperments. We were very fortunate to start with such a SOUND foundation bitch in Zeena, she was an incredible bitch with a truly one of a kind temperament and without a doubt one of the soundest bitches I have ever come across.

I am very happy with where my breeding program is at the moment - while there is still a lot of work ahead its nice to see the results of over 10 years of dedication and staying true to my vision. I have come across many fine dogs over the years and am often asked why I did not breed to them - its simple they didn't fit into the program. It has been both challenging and rewarding to stay true to the vision that I started with and track the progress and look toward the future.

I as one do not believe that every dog needs to be a Champion of record to swim in my gene pool and conversly there are many Champions of record that should not be swimming in anyones gene pool - Being a student of the breed countless hours of research and information gathering go into the thought process prior to deciding on what breedings should take place.

After a lot of hounding I have decided to put up this website to share my dogs and future breeding plans with those interested. While I will do my best to check email and respond to inquires please be patient if I do not respond right away as I also have a full time job and a family.

The History of Blue Dogs in APBT's and AmStaff's

The History of Blue Dogs in APBT's and AmStaff's
. By Jack Turner

June 10 2007 at 3:10 PM

In Wayne D. Brown's book HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER, on pages 25 and 26 he note’s that in the late 1930’s one of the most important bloodlines of Pit Bulls were the Lightner dogs. He illustrates that in the conventions of 1936 and 1937, there were Lightner dogs of the dark variety and Lightner dogs of the red nose variety, and a classic confrontation of the two. When Bob Hemphill wrote Lightner that they were going to use Hall's Searcy Jeff, of the red nose Lightner strain, in the Oklahoma Convention of 1936 at Medicine Park Oklahoma, Lightner wrote back that the red nose blood in Jeff was as game was would ever be bred, and, further that the black and blue breeding in (Runyon's Colorado) Imp (II) was as game as would ever be bred...So, the contest between Hall's Searcy Jeff and Runyon's Colorado Imp II at the Oklahoma Convention of 1936 was a classic confrontation between the red nose Lightner dogs and the dark Lightner dogs. Earl Tudor handled Imp and he proved to be game. Jeff had punished Imp severely around the head and nose and Tudor picked him up. However, he scratched Imp and he went across with his nose bumping the ground, unable to get his head up, but he took a foothold on Jeff. Jeff beat Imp in 54 minutes. Later, Hall's Searcy Jeff was to beat Imp's brother Colorado Dan, also...After Searcy Jeff had beaten Colorado Imp II and Colorado Dan, their owner, Jeff Runyon, quit the game and sold his dogs. This is one of the few times I have ever found in literature, blue dogs before 1936. The year 1936 was the year the AKC finally recognized the, as it was then known, Stafforshire Terrier. This was the year that the red nose dogs defeated the blue blooded dogs. The dogs of this blood was sold but it is not said who to, although it is mentioned that at least some of these dogs found their way to Joe Corvino who, for a time at least, was involved in the formation of the AKC American Staffordshire Terriers. Dogmen wanted winning GAME dogs back then, and Imp certainly proved his gameness that day against Jeff, in a stumbling scratch. Many a true dogmen would have been more than happy to have an Imp bred dog in their yard. Back then game losers weren’t penalized, and were worthy of being bred. I know that AmStaff people regard the red noses with abhorrence, and I also know that Game folks today don't care for the blue color. Actually most of them can’t stand it at all because most of the time (but not always) a blue dog stands for being bred for looks and looks alone. I do have to wonder though what the American Pit Bull Terrier would look like today if Imp II had won that fight compared to the American Staffordshire Terrier?

Whether or not people want to believe it, blue is a legitimate color in the American Pit Bull Terrier gene pool as evidenced and show further more by the Blue Paul, or sometimes called blue Poll. A Scottish strain now extinct, but whose descendants clearly live on in today’s blue dogs.

These solid blue or solid red Scottish gladiators resembled the fighting Staffordshires of England but could weigh twice as much. The blue dogs were known in Scotland as Blue Pauls, and the reds as Red Smuts. The name Blue Paul derives from a Scottish yarn about the pirate Paul Jones who reportedly brought the dogs from abroad to the district of Kirkintilloch.

The dogs were popular with the gypsies of that district who maintained that the dogs originally came from the Galloway coast, lending more color than blue to the Paul Jones tale. Like the bull and terrier breeds from which they derived, the Blue Pauls were game to the death in the ring. These dogs remained mute even at the height of battle, very much like the Tosa of Japan.

In appearance, the Blue Paul was similar in appearance to the Bullmastiff of the late 1800s. The dog was a smooth coated cobby dog weighing about 45 lbs (20.5 kg), standing 20 inches (51 cm) at the shoulder. The head was large, the muzzle short and square. The jaws and lips were even, without overhanging flews. The stop was slight: eyes, dark hazel. The ears, set on high, were invariably cropped. The face was wrinkleless but the eyebrows were contracted or knit. Mr. James B. Morrison of Greenock, England reported that the last Blue Paul exhibited was shown in the late 1880s."

Many people claim that the Blue Paul is now extinct. It may very well be extinct in its pure form, but they were probably crossed with The Pit Bull Terriers in England and Ireland, and the Pit Bull Terriers were brought to America from Scotland. In 1857, McCaffrey imported the dog Spring from Glasgow, Scotland to America. At that time Glasgow was the center of Blue Paul activity. In 1858, in Rhode Island, Spring won a fight in 1 hour, 35 minutes. In 1859 he won a fight in 2 hours 15 minutes. In 1860, in Boston, he beat Tom Story's dog in 2 hours 40 minutes. Spring was bred to Maid of Erin, who was an imported bitch from Dublin Ireland and produced Young Spring. Young Spring won a fight in 1 hour 15 minutes. In 1862 he beat Sheffield George's dog in 3 hours 17 minutes, in New York. When Spring was bred to John Mahon's imported bitch he produced Jeff who won a fight in Providence, Rhode Island in 1 hour. He later won against miller's dog in 1 hour 10 minutes. In 1864 he won another fight in 1 hour 10 minutes. Dick, another son of Spring, won a fight against Spring's Hope in 1 hour 17 minutes. Power's Violet was imported to America from Scotland by her Scottish owner and, on January 10, 1892, beat a dog named Spright in Massachusetts. They fought at Catch weight. Her size, plus her name which indicates a dark blue color, leads to the possibility that she might have been a Blue Paul.

If the above dogs were Blue Pauls, their bloodline was surly continued in America and others were probably imported to America, England, and Ireland as well.

Brown also writes in his book that W.C. Roper bred some game dogs from stock sent to him by Jim Williams and Bob Wallace. Some of Roper's dogs were silver buckskin in color, such as Silver Jack and Roper's (William's) Silver. Roper's Silver won 4 fights at 58 pounds, and another Tudor's Black Jack (16xW) was, according to Earl Tudor, from a Delihant's Paddy/Wichita Mike bloodline. His sire was Black Tige who was sired by Blue Mike. Blue Mike was out of Miss Blue who was sired by Imported Roger out of Henry's Blue Mary. The sire of Blue Mike was Wichita Mike who was out of Henry's Blue Madge and sired by Henry's Black Demon. Several pages later he writes "As we have seen, Tudor's Black Jack was important to the Tacoma line but he was also important to the Ruffian line of American Staffordshire Terriers. He was not only important in the development of pit dogs, including the Dibo line, but he formed the basis for the Ruffian line".

Someone new to the breed always ask what the difference is between an AKC American Staffordshire Terrier, and a UKC or ADBA American Pit Bull Terrier? When told to the truth, the true history behind the breed most say they don't fight their dogs so why should they even have to know all that stuff? The truth is, if you own a Staffordshire or a American Pit Bull Terrier, it is irresponsible of you not to know the truth, the true history behind the breed.

In Richard Pascoe’s book, "The American Staffordshire Terrier" he mentions that there are five major lines in the foundation of the American Staffordshire Terrier. Tacoma, X-pert, Ruffian, Crusader, and "California" which is not actually a line, but a combination of lines. The Tacoma was developed by Charles Doyle and Al Brown beginning with the whelping of Tacoma Jack in 1927. The Tacoma line is influenced by Corvino blood early in its history. The Tacoma line is known for its courage and working ability.

The X-Pert line traces its pedigrees back to Colby, Feeley, Corrington, Tudor and Morris. Alberta and Cliff Ormsby began the line with the whelping of Ormsby's Madge in 1930. The Ruffian line was started by Clayton Harriman in 1938 with the whelping of The Ruffian, bred by F C Klump. The Ruffian line was influential in the development of many other lines, notably E C Ringold's Gallant line, beginning with CH Gallant Ruff and the Har-wyn line of Peggy Harper which finds its foundations in the breeding efforts of Harriman and Whittaker. One of her greats was CH Sky King of Har-Wyn ( half X-Pert). The California lines were strongly influenced by Ruffian and Gallant. Early breeders appearing in California pedigrees include Steele, Gregory, Freese, Farley, Wiswall and Harrison. CH Harrison's Bozo boy was bred by RC Steele and whelped in 1936. The Chatworth Kennels of Ray and Ina Harris include dogs of Freese, Harrison and Wakefield derivation. Rossmore's Naughty Knight, who sired the foundation of the Crusader line, was bred by Gladys Smith. The Crusader line was started in 1950 by Ike and Jean Stinson. In 1955, Smith's breeding of CH Rossmore's Naughty Knight x CH Gallant Susie Q produced CH Knight Crusader, CH Knight Bomber and CH Knight Patroller. All of these dogs played a major role in the development of the Crusader line. The development of all other kennels in the breed come from combinations of these original foundation lines. Notably Sertoma, Archer, Sierra, Tryarr, Willynwood, White Rock, to name a few.

The foundation of the X-Pert line began in 1932 with Bennett's Buck x Ormsby's Madge. Ormsby's Madge (Corrington's Bennetts Mack x Bennetts Queen) Corringtons Bennetts Mack (Corringtons Tiger Jim Jr x Corringtons Mae Rose) Corringtons Mae Rose was a Tudors Jack II daughter. Her dam, Corrington's Jenny Queen was a Colby bitch. (Colby's Dan x Colbys Blinkey). Bennetts Queen was Colby through her dam, Sharon Madge (Pitts Duke x Pitts Bebe) If you trace the pedigree back two or three generations from there, you will find Colbys Disby, Colbys Bess, Colbys Galtie, Colbys Nancy, Colbys Roger, Colbys Pansy, and Colbys Sally. The X-Pert bloodline is one of oldest in AmStaffs. It was started in 1930 by Clifford & Alberta Ormsby. They lived in Hornell, NY. Clifford Ormsby was 25 years old, and Alberta was 22 when they began their breeding program. The foundation bitch of the X-Pert bloodline is Ormsby's Madge. Cliff bought her in Texas.

Clifford Ormsby: "...I started with this great breed when you could buy a Pit Bull pup for $5.00. Many times this pup had flat feet, narrow chest, no brisket, bowed legs, fiddle front, cow-hocks, was undershot and had an unreliable temperament. You could shop around and find some desirable ones but it was a problem to find good dominant breeders of quality...."

Ormsby's Madge was sired by famous pitbull Bennett's Mack, who was also known as Corrington's Mack C. Bennett's Mack was Corrington breeding. His bloods was a cross of Smith & Tudor's lines. Both lines had influence of old Henry bloodline, that was developed by Frank G.Henry in 1890's. But Tudor's dogs were mostly black part of the Henry line, when Charles Smith's dogs were more of the red part of the Henry line and more outcrossed than Tudor's. Tudor's part of Bennett's Mack pedigree was Tudor's Jack II, son of the great Tudor's Black Jack 16xW. In 1930's Tudor's gamedogs were as a sign of success. Earl Tudor of Oklahoma, or Oklahoma Kid as most dogmen of that time called him, was just 22 years old in 1915 when he won with Jack Swift. Earl became well known dogman all over the country in 1920's with his 16 times winner Black Jack dog and 9 times winner Black Jack Jr. There were many breeders in that time who decide to use Tudor's stuff in their breedings. Corrington was one of these breeders of that time. Ok, back to Ormsby's Madge... Her dam was Bennett's Queen, a cross of Hogan's & Pitts' lines. Hogan line was built on Henry blood. Some of Charles Smith's breedings are behind Hogan's too. Pitts' line was mostly old Colby's bloods with some Henry.

Clifford Ormsby was born in Hornell, NY on August 24, 1905. Alberta also was born in Hornell 3 years later, on June 29, 1908. They were good friends in fact they grew up together a couple of streets apart. Young Cliff had about every animal there was to have. His first dogs were not purebred, and Cliff wanted to have a purebred dog that had spirit. Shortly after they were married Clifford & Alberta decided to take a pure pitbull. In 1930 Cliff went to Leonard,Texas, he took the dog, that he wanted. This was a female from W.F.Bennett's breeding, out of the famous pitbull dog Bennett Mack & Bennett Queen. The name of this female pup is well known to many Am Staff breeders, ORMSBY'S MADGE. It was the start, a Great start!

In 1938 Clifford built a kennel. It was the very modern kennel for that time. There was a water heating system in the kennel floor. He put hot water system himself. When Clifford spoke about his kennel, he said: "Dr. Byer ( Ormsby's veterinarian) come down and asked, "Who built this kennel, who made this kennel for you?" I said, "I did!" He said that," this is a good layout for a small kennel." The heating in the floor, that's the most economical heating too. You see, you've got to put it in right. This is six to eight inches on center, I think three quarter inch wide. I know there's about seventy elbows in it. It has two units, there was no sense in that becouse I never divided it. I always used the whole thing. I have a pressure pump. I can put it on automatically...... "

In the beginning of Cliff & bert's Staffordshire Terrier breeding, Cliff wasn't interested in "showing" of their dogs. Alberta changed his mind though. She said, " If we're going to have dogs, I'm going to show". The first dogs they shipped to Willfred Brandon. Alberta was very interested in handling their dogs herself. And the first super champion of the X-Pert family, shown by Alberta in many dog shows was the legendary Ch. X-Pert Brindle Biff. He was the favorite dog of Clifford, Alberta & their daughter, Dorothy. When Peggy Doster asked Alberta, "What is the name of the best dog or bitch you ever bred?" Alberta said: "Biff. He was my first dog. I suppose I'm partial. You know, first show dog. I took him to shows all over the country. I showed him all over. I took him all over the place & he won all over the country. I'd go in the ring and people would say:"There goes that woman, again, with that dog"".

Alberta was licensed to judge Stafs & Boxers. She began to judging in '40'. In 1995 Peggy Doster asked Alberta: "Why did you decide to begin judging?". Alberta said this: " It got me out to California and it got me away from cleaning up kennels at home. It wasn't long ago that they wanted to know if I would come out there and judge the dogs. They had read on their catalog that I had been out there in 1979. Wouldn't I look cute....trying to judge dogs. .....Boxers and Stafs and any breed I can quality for, but I don't want to. You know, too much for me, I don't want to get out there and get sick or something, you know."

Alberta: " I was out in Califonia, judging, and I had Am Staff in the ring that was all chewed up in his head. I said, "This dog was in fight. That was in 49', I think. And he said: "Yes, he had a fight yesterday, they fought him." And I said "He did? He's all chewed up." I said, "Will he shakes hands with me?" He said, "Yeah, but he shakes with his hind leg." He stuck his hind leg up to me and shook hands."

Hope for a chance

Hope is my first foster pup. She is a loving, curious and a hopeful soul who changed my attitude about pits. I had a no tolerance policy for pits because a female pit attacked my beloved miniature schnauzer/pomeranian BFF Maddy. Maddy had no chance. I later found this same pit, whose apprearance was so altered by an untreatable infection I did not recognize her, and went into rescue mode. When I found out it was the "killer" I found myself ashamed of the emotional hatred I had for her. So when a friend told me of a pit pup called Princess who was going to be destroyed if there was no foster home found, I did not hesitate to open my kitty's, 4 furbabies and husbands home to save a life. We called her baby girl and soon realized that she had no idea that life can be good. Coming from a probable puppy mill, she had no potty training, did not know how to run and play, and felt safest in a corner, hiding and unsure. I named her Hope. And I love her. And I will fullfill my promise to her that her life will be the best and that her new family will be worthy of her love. Someone must think that I can handle this amazing breed because a few weeks later I found two pit puppies abandoned on a country road and scooped them up for a ride to my home. One has already found a home and now has a big pit brother and 4 humans (two children) that love him. After 43 years, I have found my purpose.

Fear aggression in rescued pit mix

We have had Ezri for 2 1/2 weeks. We were told she arrived at the shelter covered in pig feces in November. She was adopted in December, returned after a month because she hid all the time. Was then put in a foster home for 5 days before she came to us. She loves the kids (6-18 years old) but is still very fearful of my husband and I. She growls and barks at us consistently. I am hand feeding her and giving treats such as cheese and hotdog often but she will only accept these things if one of the kids is right there. The trainer said to work on sit stay but she is too fearful.

I got a product called Calm Balm, that has done nothing for us. Are there any products you recommend to help a fearful dog calm down?

Ezri loves other dogs, the dog park is her favorite place so far. She was not fearful at the shelter but she was in the foster home from what I gather. She was less fearful of me initially, but something spooked her, possibly cat jumping off my lap in fear as she approached. That was the first time she growled at me. She no longer displays any fear of my 12 yo but occasionally a bit toward the others, no growling or barking at them

I'm baffled at her apparently increasing fear when we haven't corrected harshly in the slightest. She seems best if the adults just ignore her but we can't do that forever. We will meet with the trainer again this weekend but does anyone else have other ideas? Doggy Prozac? Prozac for me?

Puppy clings to life in the Bronx after owner beats her with shovel, buries her in snowbank in front of shocked neighbors

Witnesses called 911 on Friday when they saw Raul Cruz, 43, beat his dog Hennessy with his fists and a shovel outside Cruz*s home on E. 167th St. near Hall Pl., cops said. Officers dug the poor pooch out of the snow and arrested Cruz.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

Published: Friday, January 30, 2015, 12:42 PM

@NYPD41Pct via Twitter Hennessy, a brown brindle pit bull mix, was rescued Friday after her owner beat her with a shovel and left her for dead in a snowbank, police said.

Shocked neighbors watched in horror as a Bronx man kicked and beat his puppy with a shovel, buried her in a snowbank and left her for dead.

Witnesses called 911 on Friday and one shocked neighbor even secretly videotaped Raul Cruz, 43, as he beat poor Hennessy with his fists and a shovel outside his home on E. 167th St. near Hall Place a day earlier.

The sicko then buried the pup, a brown brindle pit bull mix, in a 2-foot snowbank behind his Longwood apartment. When cops arrived only her snout was visible — yet still she survived.

“We had to physically dig her out of the snow,” said Sgt. Derek Mercado, who owns a 6-year-old Shetland sheepdog named Oscar. Mercado was upset by the sight of the wounded pup.

“She was crying and she was actually trying to pull herself out as we were digging,” he added. “As soon as we got enough room for her to get out, she popped right out and ran right up to me.”

One of several witnesses called 911 early Friday when she heard the dog whimpering.

Michael Schwartz for New York Daily News The dog was dug out of a snowbank in a yard at E. 167th St.

Police arrived about 2:50 a.m. and found Hennessy buried in Cruz*s backyard snowbank.

“It seemed like something was wrong with her back legs,” said Mercado. “When we got her out, I knew that we had to do whatever we could to catch this guy.”

Cruz, still nearby, was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruelty, criminal possession of a weapon and torturing, injuring and not feeding an animal, officials said.

He was ordered held on $5,000 bail Friday night, which a relative posted, officials said.

Cruz allegedly beat, kicked and threw Hennessy around the yard, according to court documents. He also repeatedly took the dog into a rear shed where residents heard “yells and animal like screaming,” the documents reveal.

Michael Schwartz for New York Daily News Sgt. Derek Mercado (pictured) and another officer helped rescue the dog and arrested Raul Cruz, the owner.

One neighbor came forward with video of the attack showing Cruz beating Hennessy as she whimpers and cries, Mercado said.

Hennessy was taken to the ASPCA for treatment.

A vet who rendered care told officials that Hennessy sustained skull fractures, as well as fractures to her legs, ribs and back, and lost a few teeth, court papers show.

Neighbors were outraged by Cruz*s heartless brutality.

“He*s an a------,” said neighbor Dave Brown, 45. “He*s an idiot to do something like that. The dog can*t fight back. How are you going to beat up a dog like that?

“I hope they lock him up and throw away the key,” Brown added.

Word of the Day: succumb

vendredi 30 janvier 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 31, 2015 is:

succumb • \suh-KUM\ • verb

1 : to yield to superior strength or force or overpowering appeal or desire 2 : to be brought to an end (such as death) by the effect of destructive or disruptive forces

Examples:

Rescuers feared that the missing mountain climbers would succumb to hypothermia.

"When I look back on my life . . . I see moments where it might have been understandable had I turned to drugs or ice cream. But I never succumbed. My natural tendency … is to be happy." — Martin Short, I Must Say: My Life as a Humble Comedy Legend, 2014

Did you know?

If the idea of someone succumbing brings to mind the image of a person lying down before more powerful forces, you have an excellent grasp of the Latin that gave us succumb. Succumb derives from the French word succomber, which is itself from the Latin word succumbere, meaning "to fall down" or "to yield." Succumbere was formed by combining sub-, meaning "under," with -$#@!bere, meaning "to lie down." The earliest application of succumb in the late 15th century was as a transitive verb meaning "to bring down" or "to overwhelm," but this sense is now obsolete. The current sense of "to yield" first appeared in print in the early 17th century; the more specific use—yielding to a disease or other destructive force—followed two centuries later.

CA: A veterinarian's quest to save a broken dog from being euthanized

A veterinarian in San Diego, California, is going to great lengths to save a dog who was abandoned at a veterinary clinic where she works.

The dog, who has since been named "Spotty," arrived with multiple issues, including giardia and a laceration from a dog fight. Dr. Alice D'Amore corrected the medical issues, and altered Spotty, but there was emotional damage that the young dog had sustained that she was unable to fix on her own.

With the help of a trainer, Dr. D'Amore worked to help Spotty get through his fear and anxiety issues, and he showed signs of improvement - enough so that he was recently placed into a home. Unfortunately, his adoptive family had a stranger come into the home within 24 hours of Spotty's arrival and that person was bitten when Spotty reacted in fear.

All hope of a normal life, with a family, was crushed when the adopter returned the seemingly "broken" dog. Dr. D'Amore has referred to the situation as "heartbreaking" because she knows that inside of Spotty is a loving dog who wants to be good.

Fearing that there would not be the right home available for Spotty, the dreaded "E" word was considered...after all of the training and behavioral work, without the hoped for outcome, Spotty might have to be euthanized.

On Wednesday afternoon, Dr. D'Amore announced that there was once again home; she was able to get Spotty into a rehabilitation/training program with Brandon Fouche (http://ift.tt/1DfSBOM). Fouche is confident that Spotty is a good candidate to be trained and rehabilitated, Dr. D'Amore wrote:

Brandon says that Spotty is reacting out of a learned behavior that Brandon can help him to unlearn - people bending into his space (i.e. an aggressive measure) and then showing some sign of weakness (e.g. a sweet voice saying, “Come here, sweet Spotty!”).

So, he picks up on the weakness and moves forward. He stated that this is a learned behavior (probably learned while on the streets homeless on Ocean Beach), and so, Spotty can unlearn it, with Brandon's help.

The training comes at a steep cost - $3,700 to be exact. Through fundraising, over $2,800 has already been raised - there are a large number of people who are pulling for Spotty right now, and putting their own dollars to work to help ensure that he has every opportunity for success.

An exceptional effort for a dog who once had no hope of any future whatsoever. Click here to read more about the effort to save Spotty.

Odd pee smell

So ever since we got back from Christmas break Adonis' pee has started having a strange smell. It's gradually increased in strength and is hard to describe but smells sort of like sunflower seeds but a lot stronger. It's kind of a mix of acidic and salty smelling I guess, it's hard to describe when I haven't smelled it in a bit.

I was wondering if any of y'all have ever smelled or heard of anything like this. I figure its because I switched his food formula so do y'all think switching to something else will make the smell go away? Is the smell a sign of something being wrong or just a weird reaction to the food. I've been thinking about switching to Victor anyway so this just gives me a reason to toss out this old food.

Falling "Hair Showers"

My 10-month old Amstaff has been on very good quality, grain free food his whole life, using different brands and moving up to increasingly better brands. He has been on Orijen now for at least 3 months. His coat has definitely gotten shinier and softer but his hair still falls out in a "hair shower" every time we pet him. You can literally just pet him and with every pat hair just showers down. He gets bathed about every 1 1/2 weeks and brushed about 3 times a week. I give him a fish oil capsule every day. He gets about a tablespoon of coconut oil nearly every day (I feed it in a frozen treat ball). I had him tested for food allergies and he basically has almost none--only 2 foods of moderate reactivity is to rice and turkey and the food he has been on for months doesn't have either one.

He does not itch or have any skin issues since last summer/early fall when he had some bacterial infections and then 1 round of a staph infection. He is on regular flea medication and I never see any fleas on him or see him scratching like he is chasing a flea.

Any suggestions?

Two pit bull puppies at once!

Hi, we've got two littermates, boy/girl, at 6 weeks, they're 7 weeks now, starting puppy cl$#@! in 3 weeks (trainer going on vacation)..my SO has had pits before, I've had lab mixes..am lucky to be a stay-at-home girl so MUCH time and attention as needed...they're crated together...it's snowy here and they're so young I carry them out to 'go' and reward them at site, so far pretty good, considering their age! They get some free play time after going out and afterwards sometimes crash on their dog bed, sometimes they go into the crate, sometimes I put them in the crate...Any tips on leash training, before cl$#@! start...?

thanks!

Word of the Day: urticaria

jeudi 29 janvier 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 30, 2015 is:

urticaria • \er-tuh-KAIR-ee-uh\ • noun

: hives

Examples:

The first sign of the patient's allergic reaction to the medication was an outbreak of urticaria.

"Chronic urticaria is common and can appear on any part of the body. Sunlight and heat can be triggers for some people, whereas cold is a trigger for others." — Keith Roach, Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, Florida), October 14, 2014

Did you know?

Hives can be caused by a number of things. It can be a reaction to a piece of food you ate, a new medication you took, or irritants in the air you're breathing—or to wandering into a patch of nettles. Urticaria, the medical term for hives, points the finger at nettles, at least etymologically: it comes from the Latin word urtica, meaning "nettle." Urtica itself is related to the Latin verb urere, meaning "to burn," a nod to the stinging hairs many species of nettle possess.

Dog skin issues/shedding

My 2.5 year old pit bull slug has been dealing with some skin issues lately. He's developed a bald spot on his head and has been prescribed anti-fungal cream. This problem has been slowly getting worse over the past 3-6 months. Over the past week, he developed a rash back in his groin area and around the flanks in sides. He was prescribed a malacetic shampoo which i bathed him in this afternoon. is it normal for him to be shedding more than normal following a bath with or without this type of shampoo? i've never paid attention to his shedding following baths before this recent skin/coat issue, but he seems to be shedding much more than usual when pet him this afternoon. also, should i worry about the malacetic shampoo drying out his skin? He's always had a bit of a dry coat, which i've tried to combat with omega fatty acids and salmon oil in his grain-free diet, so i'm worried bathing him with this type of shampoo might leave him itchier than ever. any help/input would be very appreciated

Potty Training

Been trying to crate train my 9 week old puppy & all it's done is train him to want to go out every 2 hours or less. Sometimes he won't wait & he'll pee in the crate & then lay in it. If he's outside of his crate for any period of time, he'll pee on the floor.Training pads don't work, he only wants to eat them Sometimes he'll go all night without needing to go, sometimes he wants out every hour or less. We don't want to leave him in the crate 24/7, because there's no family interaction for him. How do we train him to hold his bladder longer ? He' not sick, we've had him at the Vet to get checked out. What should we do ?

Nobody Wants to Kill Animals: Josephine Co Edition

Screengrab from KTVL showing a portion of a protest sign held by a Riley supporter.

A dog reportedly wandered into a family*s*yard in Grant*s P$#@!, Oregon last month. *The family*kept the dog for 3 weeks, calling her Riley, while area animal advocates networked her to find her possible owner. *Riley was reportedly a friendly dog who got along well with humans of all ages, canines and chickens.

On January 10, Riley got lost and was picked up by the Josephine Co pound. *Those who had been working to help the dog attempted to get her out but were refused. *First the county said Riley had to be held for a minimum of 3 days for possible owner redemption. *Then the county said they had to keep her for a veterinary evaluation, which took another week. *Riley reportedly tested positive for heartworm and passed a temperament test while at the pound. *Her advocates raised money from the community for heartworm treatment, found an adopter and continued to seek her release from the pound.

Making no headway, a protest was organized*for Monday, January 26. *Protesters showed up at the county courthouse with signs saying “Save Riley”. *But the pound had already killed Riley on Friday, January 23. *County commissioner Cherryl Walker issued a statement that day in response to the public outcry. *She states Riley was killed upon recommendation of a vet because the dog:

 • had fleas and ticks

 • was over 8 years old

 • had tested positive for heartworm

 • had “demonstrated aggressive behavior”

Obviously failing to sell even herself on her lame excuses, Ms. Walker goes on to imply that heartworm is as frightening a public health issue*as malaria and that Riley may have died undergoing treatment anyway. *So to protect the community from malaria heartworm and since you know, dog could have fallen over dead anytime, anywhere, anyway, the county decided to kill her. *She makes no mention of the rescuers trying to adopt the dog,*that it wouldn*t have cost the county any resources to save Riley or that Riley had a right to live, even if she wasn*t young and even though she had parasites.

Diane Hoover, director of the county health department which oversees the pound, is totally fine with Riley*s killing:

“I don*t feel like overriding a vet*s recommendation, when he*s a licensed professional,” Hoover said.

Yeah sometimes I don*t feel like putting forth effort at my job either. *But then I worry maybe my boss won*t feel like paying me if I don*t do a decent job. *I guess Ms. Hoover doesn*t have that concern. *No need to seek a second opinion from another vet or let the dog go to the adopter who wanted her or anything at all actually.

[The Josephine Co pound] typically has to euthanize more than 500 dogs a year. More than 700 dogs are adopted out to good homes in an average year.

Has to? *Because Riley*s case makes it seem more like WANTS TO.

(Thanks Clarice for the links.)

Photos from Aegean Seaside

Hello Folks;

A couple of days ago, a couple of friends, myself and Hera made a casual walk along the seaside of Aegean Sea. I took some photos and think that they will warm you up in this chilly winter time. Enjoy! :)

After arriving to our destination, we took a path down to the seaside. Weather was great, with no wind and plenty of sunshine. And who can stop Hera when she's near the seaside! Off she goes to swim:

We continued our walk along the seaside, above the cliffs. Here's a good example of the color "Turquoise" and crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. The color got its name from Turkey. Guess why?

A fisherman sails and p$#@! by the channel close to us. He's taking sips of Turkish Rakı. We greet and continue our way.

We find ourselves at a small fisherman's village after 2,5 hours of walking:

While we rest and enjoy some beers, Hera watches us:

She forms a nice relationship with a puppy:

After the break, we start our way back. But look at this beauty, can you leave it easily..

We did not walk along the cliffs but took the shore this time. Hera is really happy about it:

She couldn't resist no more and swims again while the sun starts to set:

From distance, high above the hills, the fisherman's village looks really cute:

Returning back to home, we took a hot shower together and were dead to the world.

Hope you liked it. Cheers :)
