Kuranda Bed- Opinions, and SA

mercredi 28 janvier 2015

I adopted a pittie puppy from a local rescue when he was 8 weeks old (he's 16 weeks now) and he's been great for the most part. Learns fast, smart, healthy, playful- nothing out of the ordinary...except that he's developed separation anxiety. We've been trying the crate from day one without any luck- we've tried all of the usual tactics like making it fun, comfortable, fav toys, feeding him in it, stuffed Kong, radio on, towel with our scents, short times away & returning without any happy/excited emotions, ignoring his screams & barking, keeping his crate next to my 5 yr old Bulldog's crate, etc etc etc......... But nothing has helped. We figured that in time he would give up and learn that his crate isn't such a bad place after all and that we always will return, but it seems that his willpower is strong. He's never peed or pooped in his crate fortunately but he's destroyed 2 beds so far.

He happily goes into the crate and will occasionally play in it alone... plus he has no issues with being in it with the door shut as long as he can see us, but once we are out of sight, he loses his mind. My bulldog is the best possible example of a crate loving dog (he chews his toys & falls asleep) but the puppy is not influenced by the calmness of him whatsoever.

So what to do.... We don't know, :no2:. But since regular crate beds get shredded like toilet paper, I've been looking at the Kuranda for the durability of it. Some people say leave the puppy on just the plastic crate tray but I know he'll destroy that and I don't really want him tearing up plastic and possibly digesting it.

And yes, I know that if we deal with the SA we won't have any bedding issues. We're working on it- next step is some sort of trainer, but we do have a budget and can't spend a fortune on training (please spare the "well you shouldn't have adopted a dog if you couldn't afford a trainer" comments- we're beyond that). I've had several dogs in my adult life and none have ever had such an issue with crating or SA- it's very discouraging & frustrating.

I know there's no magic answers and I did read the SA thread, but any advice is appreciated.
