Need variety of ideas for resource guarding a person

dimanche 25 janvier 2015

So I have always made it a huge point with any dog I've owned to start from puppy hood to condition them to not resource guard, especially from a human. I've always been able to take ANYTHING away from my dogs, been able to move them from a space, etc. they all eat at the same time (I'm standing right next to them for the whole 2 mins of course in case something were to happen). But recently Chance and Lizzie have had a few incidents where they were resource guarding me. Usually I will be sitting on the couch and Lizzie will be next to me. Then Chance will come up wanting attention. Lizzie will show her teeth, and Chance returns it back with a growl or snap. I've now had 3 incidents. Now most of the time they share space just fine. So it's not a regular thing. Luckily I was able to stop it from happening yesterday because as soon as I saw Lizzie show her teeth I saw Chance lick his lips (what he does when stimulated/excited) and stood up to remove them. so guess from now on we just won't be sitting together. But I'd like to try a few things and see if I can get rid of this behavior. Obviously if I can't that's fine, but I'm sure some methods may work. I know how to condition with an object or food, but how should I with a person. Especially since it's so random. I think it's the attention they are getting pissed about. But if avoidance is my only option I'll accept that. Any ideas?
