Luigi and Albert

I don't post much, I am not even really here much anymore. I have been wanting to post to share how sad my husband and I are that our dearest Luigi died 2 weeks ago. He was five, he had a sudden, not trauma related, rupture of a disc in the middle of his back. This happens to dachshunds, bassets, etc. We don't know why it happened to him, but it was very accute and he went from fine to paralyzed and in screaming pain in hours. A surgeon said he was a poor surgical candidate due to a number of reasons I won't get into. We scheduled the surgery anyway, I had to hope. We went home with prednisone and hope. Over night he moved in some way that took him from hurting when moved to constant crying, rigid trembling pain. I could not allow it, he was cuddly, noisy, funny, anxious and full love for everyone (except cats). He was my heart dog, and he died in my arms. He had about 15 seconds when the sedative had eased everything but he was still awake, he gave Michael and me each a single kiss, looked us both in the eyes, and layer his head between us. He is buried next to my childhood dog, and he will be loved as long as all the people who met him live. We wondered how long to wait but our home was so quiet. We just brought home Albert, a 19 month old rescue who is almost too good to be true. Keep your hearts open, Luigi always did.
