Evaluating Puppy Conformation

jeudi 20 novembre 2014

When one is interested in purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder, how do you know how well conformed the puppy will be once it is an adult? Are you only reasonably sure how the dog will look, because you know its' pedigree?

The thought occurred to me last night while looking at a website that educates about APBT conformation. I ride horses, and have become a bit of a form to function conformation geek. I've really been studying it in regards to my chosen breed/sport (Arabian/Dressage). It started out mostly to make sure my horse stays sound, due to the type of exercises we do in relation to what his conformation allows him to do. Some things can be strengthened with certain muscle development, while other issues can never be fixed. It has become very interesting, and naturally dog confo is interesting to me as well, and there are similarities studying both.

So I'm curious if evaluating puppy confo is similar to evaluating young horse confo? What will always stay the same throughout growth, and what will change? For example: placement of elbows and stifles relation to each other, or placement of the hocks, and certain hip/shoulder/leg angulations will not change with growth on a horse. In turn this affects movement. Appearing lanky or being butt high can change with development. We all know that genetics play a large part in conformation, such as what the pedigree is and how consistently it produces. I am just wondering if there is a good way to know how a pup will look structurally as an adult, without using only the pedigree as a sole prediction?

Hopefully I articulated this well enough to ask the question right! I won't be buying a puppy for awhile, if at all, but this question just crossed my mind. If I were in the market, I'd want the dog to look a certain way as an adult. Just seeing parents won't guarantee what could be waiting in prior generations to show up.

I $#@!ume the best answer is educating myself further on bloodlines and conformation, but thought I'd pick your brains. Seems there is a lot of knowledge here.

Thanks!
