Word of the Day: macaroni

samedi 28 février 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 01, 2015 is:

macaroni • \mak-uh-ROH-nee\ • noun

1 : pasta made from semolina and shaped in the form of slender tubes 2 : an affected young man : fop

Examples:

One of Tracy's favorite comfort foods is homemade macaroni and cheese.

"He had been a macaroni of the eighteenth century, and the friend, in his youth, of Lord Ferrars." — Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1890

Did you know?

As you may have suspected, the macaroni in the song "Yankee Doodle" is not the familiar food. The feather in Yankee Doodle's cap apparently makes him a macaroni in the now rare "fop" or "dandy" sense. The sense appears to have originated with a club established in London by a group of young, well-traveled Englishmen in the 1760s. The founders prided themselves on their appearance, sense of style, and manners, and they chose the name Macaroni Club to indicate their worldliness. Because macaroni was, at the time, a new and rather exotic food in England, the name was meant to demonstrate how stylish the club's members were. The members were themselves called macaronis, and eventually macaroni became synonymous with dandy and fop.

Ruptured anterior Cruciate Ligament

Hey everyone so I just took diesel to the vet today and I found out that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. I feel so bad fr the little baby. The vet said with him being so young (11 months). That surgery is really the best option. I called the orthopedic surgeon and he is scheduled for a consultation on Monday but Im nervous and can't wait that long. Has anyone ever gone through this before? I just don't know what to expect. How long does recovery take? Will he ever walk normal again? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I'm just nervous for him especially because I can't take him myself :-(.

So it took much longer than expected but Dakota's potty training woes are finally behind us! ...Sort of.

She still pees in her kennel over night.

I feel like I've tried everything.

EXCEPT limiting water before bed. Which brings me here!

I'm just a little hesitant to limit her water without input from other people.

My partner and I get home from work around 5:30, Let Dakota out of her kennel. She eats supper at 6:30, and our last potty break is usually around 9:30 when we're heading to bed. What time do you suggest I pick up her water for the night? Should I encourage her to drink it right before I pick it up, in case she hasn't been at it in awhile?

I just don't want to dehydrate her. I might be being paranoid but it's better to worry than not care, right??

When is a "provoked" bite not okay?

I saw something last night that really disturbed me, I will explain at the end of this post so it doesn't overtake my actual question. I also posted this here in the controversial thread because I think this topic has the potential to get heated.

In the purest sense of the law, dog bites are usually viewed as "provoked" - meaning someone/thing caused a reactionary bite, or "unprovoked," - meaning the dog bit for no apparent cause or reason. I want to make this as clean as possible (fingers crossed) so I want to remove the BSL element and the breed trait element, as the law (in theory) typically sees a dog as a dog. Also I was hoping to keep it a general discussion, with the dog being just a dog, not APBT or German Shepard or whatever. Because I realize that breed traits often play into opinions on what is acceptable and what is not.

So when is a "provoked" bite not okay?

In Maryland we have a "one bite law," and AC usually views dog bites as "provoked or unprovoked." Depending on the circumstance is how they deal with the dog, $#@!uming there is no prior bite history a "provoked" bite tends to end in quarantine and that's the end of their involvement. The families are left to sort out all the legalities and cost, the end. So that brings me to why I am asking this question; Cesar 911. I turned on my TV last night and it was on (honestly didn't know he was still on TV) and as I was about to change the channel when something the father said to Cesar caught my attention and I had to watch the train wreck. His bulldog had bitten his son on 3 separate occasions, on the 2nd or 3rd bite - I can't be sure because I was too pissed off and it blurred for me, the dog went for the 3 year-olds THROAT. The father wanted to shoot the dog, the mother said no. Even Cesar agreed that going for the throat was serious and with intent to kill. Of course he did his "rehabilitation" crap anyway. I DO NOT agree with letting the dog live, just to make that clear. But my question stems from the hospital stays that the son had, here we have to report all dog bites, so in theory after the 2nd bite AC would have seized the dog. However these parents kept the dog long enough to bite THREE times. Regardless of "provoked" or not, at what point does someone step in and remove the dog? Obviously I blame the humans a bit more than the dog, if I had it my way the animals and child would be rehomed - except for the bulldog, whom I would euthanize.

This caused many arguments at my work today, so I'm interested in your replies.

Veronica gets ready for a walk

And today...we actually went for a real walk!!

It's been so cold and snowy...we've been pretty much just futzing around playing training games. (This winter sure has made me appreciate having a lazy dog! No need to feel guilty about not getting enough walks in - when you have to physically push the dog off the bed, drag her outside and she then proceeds to slink about with her tail between her legs :no2: )

AZ: MSCO: Dog, cockfighting ring discovered in Avondale

Paulina Pineda, The Republic | azcentral.com 9:20 a.m. MST February 27, 2015

Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says Avondale police discovered an animal-fighting ring on Thursday night while executing a search warrant related to a narcotics investigation.

More than 50 roosters, eight pit bulls and two small dogs at a home near Roeser Road and Avondale Boulevard, according to Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Avondale police were searching the property in connection with a suspected drug operation involving heroin and other narcotics. Four suspects -- two men and two women -- were arrested, according to Arpaio.

Arpaio said detectives also located drugs used to stimulate the animals, as well as talons and razors. Detectives also found chains with balls tied around a tree in the yard that are typically used to strengthen dog teeth.

It was not known how long the bird and dog fighting had been going on and if neighbors were aware of the activities, the sheriff said.

Detectives believe the two small dogs were being used as bait to stimulate the pit bulls, and investigators received information that there may be dead roosters buried in the backyard, Arpaio said.

The dogs seemed to be in good health, but had no water and lived in inadequate conditions, Arpaio said. A veterinarian was examining the animals at the scene.

Officials on Thursday night were seeking a warrant to seize the dogs. If granted, the animals would be housed at the Maricopa County Sheriff's Animal Safe House Unit, Arpaio said.

Wigan: Man Jailed for training animals to fight

Man Jailed For Pumping Pit Bulls Full Of Steroids And Chaining Them To Treadmills Ahead Of Illegal Dog Fights

A British man has been jailed for his barbaric treatment of pit bulls that he pumped full of steroids and chained to treadmills in an obsessive bid to prepare the poor animals for illegal dog fights.

According to the Manchester Evening News, a court heard that John Psaila, 49, is behind ‘some of most serious dog fighting gangs in the country’.

Following a raid on his Wigan home, officers from the RSPCA uncovered a disturbing range of dog fighting paraphernalia. Alongside two treadmills, the officials were shocked to discover a slaughter hour ‘bolt’ used for killing seriously injured animals, and steroids, used to breed more powerful and aggressive pit bulls.

Also discovered at the father’s of two property were two “breaking sticks” scarred by dog bites. The court heard that such sticks were used to separate fighting dogs and also to prize open a dog’s mouth when it becomes “fanged.” An expression to describe what happens when a dog bites through its own lip, thus rendering it defenseless.

The RSPCA described Psaila’s home in Thornvale, Abram as a “training school” for fighting dogs.

Two pit bulls called Ziggy and Tip were found at the property. Psaila pleaded guilty to 14 offences including training animals to fight.

Tony Stock, prosecuting, informed Wigan and Leigh magistrate’ court that Psaila and other owners of fighting dogs subjected their animals to a brutal regime lasting 35 days know as “the keep.” During this time the pit bulls were trained vigorously to get them fighting fit.

Upon examination of Psaila’s mobile phone, prosecutors unearthed further evidence of the dog breeder’s involvement in illegal dog fighting. One of his texts regarding a pit bull’s performance in a fight read, ”Yeah, I remember she quit. Good mouth but no heart.’ Magistrats were informed the message was used to describe a strong jawed dog who lacked courage.

Mr Stock told the court that Psaila was a man ‘intrinsically bound up in organised dog fighting’.

“The summonses to which this defendant had pleaded guilty are indicative of a man engaged in organised dog fighting. It has a highly organised tight-knit fraternity who protect identities by hiding behind kennel names and keeping in touch on mobile phones.

“When looking at certain text messages and literature recovered from the defendant, inevitably this is a man intrinsically bound up in organised dog fighting.”

BBC News reports that Psaila’s defence, Clare Parrot, said her client had been a dog breeder for a long time, but only recently started training dogs for fighting because “times were hard” and he was “strapped for cash.” She said he initially denied being involved in dog fighting “out of shame.”

Psaila was jailed for 121 days under the Animal Welfare Act. As he was escorted to the cells, Psaila, who has a pit bull tattooed across his back, winked at his daughter.

http://ift.tt/1wy6nhQ]

RSPCA Chief Inspector Ian Briggs described Psaila as having “no regard for the pit bulls in his care – all he wanted out of those dogs was to boost his own ego and his own standing inside the dog-fighting fraternity by fighting them as much as he could.”

“John Psaila appears to be a big player in the dog fighting world, judging by the evidence we found during our investigation. Despite dog fighting being outlawed 180 years ago, we are seeing a growing number of cases. Those who organise and watch the fights have an absolute twisted enjoyment in watching violence.”

$#@!istant Palmdale School Superintendent Fired Over Child Abuse, Dog Fighting Allegations

February 26, 2015 10:37 PM

PALMDALE (CBSLA.com) — An $#@!istant superintendent who worked for the Palmdale School District has been fired due to child abuse allegations as well as her role in a dog fighting ring, authorities said.

Pauline Winbush has 30 days to appeal the school board’s unanimous decision.

“The public should know that the board and district staff has acted professionally and diligently throughout this entire matter,” stated Raul Maldonado, superintendent of schools, in a statement about the firing.

The district placed Winbush on paid administrative leave Dec. 1, and then voted Tuesday to terminate her employment agreement.

KCAL9’s Rachel Kim says Winbush is awaiting trial on dog fighting, animal cruelty and child-abuse charges. The school board said it fired Winbush after its own investigation.

Winbush and her boyfriend were each charged with four felony counts of dog fighting, 17 felony counts of cruelty to an animal, one felony count of child abuse and several Los Angeles County health and safety code violations, including unsanitary conditions after a raid at their Lancaster home.

Investigators said among the unsanitary conditions, they found nearly 20 injured and malnourished pit bulls, several coops filled with dead and decomposing pigeons, two containers of dead mice and a dead puppy in a trash can. They also said they found dog fighting and dog breeding materials.

Kim spoke to parents who were surprised by the allegations against Winbush.

“For her to have that position and to be involved in that … when I heard it, I was pretty surprised,” parent Adrian Serrano said.

“Getting caught for things like that, how do you trust people that are supposed to be here to serve you and the community?” parent Ashley Hawkins asked.

Kim also spoke with Kevin Williams, Winbush’s boyfriend, outside their Lancaster home. He declined an on-camera interview but said the charges were absolutely not true, that they’re devastated and that they’ll have their day in court.

According to the district’s website, Winbush was a teacher in the LA Unified School District in 1989. In 1992, she joined the Palmdale School District as an elementary teacher. She then served as an $#@!istant principal, principal and director of human resources before becoming the $#@!istant superintendent of human resources, the job she no longer has.

“I think that was right, the right thing to do,” Serrano said.

Pitbull will arrive in couple days

Folks,

Good morning.

As I mentioned before, my brother in law was considering a pit bull and yesterday after visiting the breeder facility and their background check concluded, he bought the puppy that will be at his home Monday.

I have amstaff and the way I'm raising him is released at home. He just have a place to eat/drink/sleep but no fenses or crates, what personally i don't know if works or not for pitbulls.

So based on that, couple questions:

1) Crate or not ?

2) Collar as soon as it arrives or wait few weeks more ?

3) water available all the time ? Or only under demand ?

The puppy will arrive with 55 days.

I will take and publish his photos as soon as he arrives.

Any Tip is very welcome.

Best Regards

Dakar

Word of the Day: pontificate

vendredi 27 février 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 28, 2015 is:

pontificate • \pahn-TIF-uh-kayt\ • verb

1 a : to officiate as a pontiff b : to celebrate pontifical m$#@! 2 : to speak or express opinions in a pompous or dogmatic way

Examples:

Stan loves to hear himself talk and will often pontificate on even the most trivial issues.

"Though the game was another dud—a Patriots' blowout of the hapless Colts—sports columnists worldwide were given a unique chance to pontificate on, of all things, the air pressure of footballs." — Shelly Griffith, Daily Post-Athenian (Athens, Tennessee), January 30, 2015

Did you know?

In ancient Rome, the pontifices were powerful priests who administered the part of civil law that regulated relationships with the deities recognized by the state. Their name, pontifex, derives from the Latin words pons, meaning "bridge," and facere, meaning "to make," and some think it may have developed because the group was $#@!ociated with a sacred bridge over the river Tiber (although there is no proof of that). With the rise of Catholicism, the title pontifex was transferred to the Pope and to Catholic bishops. Pontificate derives from pontifex, and in its earliest English uses it referred to things $#@!ociated with such prelates. By the late 1800s, pontificate was also being used derisively for individuals who spoke as if they had the authority of an ecclesiastic.

moving from large house to apartment

Hopefully I posted in the right section this time lol. So My pit is 3 months and is specializing at daycare and I spend everyday training her, because I have no job lol. She has been living with me and my parents for 6 weeks and now moving into an apartment with my friend who volunteers at the spca, so he is a dog lover. My question are should I take the dog over before to roam the place and check it out, or take the other route by training her tje living room is off limits for now. She is gonna be confined to a smaller kitchen area only and slowly give her more space. So any info will help, set up first and train to stay out of areas with baby gates or let her sniff around the whole place first then train that the kitchen is her area. Thanks guys

Releasing a Toy

So I have 2 huge problems with Crash- humping (posted about that a few days ago) and not giving up toys.

This does not apply to food whatsoever. Crash is raw fed and has never guarded his food, I can take anything away if I NEED to- but I only do it if its a danger in some way.

The problem doesn't even seem like resource guarding to me, but any insight on this is appreciated. It applies to all toys other than a nylabone type toy (which he isn't interested in anyway) such as ropes, stuffies, balls, puller toy (large purple foam ring), etc.

He will bring you a ball to play with him, but he just punches you with it without dropping it. He knows 'drop' because he does choose to drop it sometimes (I will go over that in a min.) If you go to grab it, he holds on tighter. You cannot even trade him for the juiciest steak or duck neck (his favorite piece of food) once you have already asked him to drop it and he doesn't comply. If you already have the 'trade item' in front of his face when you ask him to drop, depending on how good it is, he will drop it before asking.

However, this is a problem, so I have been working on him with the puller toy and a ball. I have only been working with him in 2 low stress environments- In my house (we have progressed to different rooms) and at my desk at work. If we are in one of those 2 places, he has a lot higher chance of dropping it. I will ask him to drop, if he does it, I mark & treat, and throw the ball right back to him. I can also ask him to drop either the ball or puller toy and work with him with the toy sitting in view for impulse control exercises.

If he does not drop it I just stop the exercise and ignore him until the toy is dropped or the exercise is gone. Once its dropped I mark & treat and sometimes won't even take the toy. Just reward him for dropping it- depending on the task we are working- I only work on 1 at a time. It started with just him dropping it, me NOT taking it. I have progressed to him dropping it and mark & treat him letting me pick it up. (previously he learned if he drops it, I mark & treat, he will grab the toy before I have a chance to grab it, so I modified to 2 different exercises- one being him dropping it and two being him letting me pick it up)

At this point I am at a standstill. I have moved this exercise to other rooms of my house, but once we try to do it in a more open room (such as the hallway or the walkway to the back yard) its just an absolute no way- not going to drop it.

This problem is two-fold. The only time I have ever been worried he is going to 'bite' someone is if they pick up one of his toys or try to take one of his toys out of his mouth. He gets excited and tries to grab the toy out of their hand. The intention is never to bite the person, just grab the toy out of their hands, but he is overzealous and has nipped my hand on accident before- one time he totally got one of my fingers, dropped the toy and my finger in shock & awe and you could tell that he realized my finger was in there and KNOWS that's a no-no (he was very mouthy when I first got him and did a lot of work on not putting his mouth around people's hands) so I am not worried about it being aggression of any sort.

Everyone who knows Crash knows NOT to engage with him when he has toys. Its the only way to get the stupid people around me to just not screw with his toys- if I made rules about HOW to handle the toys, it wouldn't work, so I have just made it NO toys.

The other problem being I can't freaking PLAY with my dog. I can't do rope toys (I do, but only in very controlled environments) I can't play fetch with him (which he loves when he is willing to give up the toy) and mostly- I can't use toys for training, which I would LOVE to do since he is SO toy motivated.

Some things that I do to manage- He usually isn't allowed to play with toys he isn't willing to give up. His willingness to give them back to me dictates when he is allowed to have the toys.

Originally I had 6-7 of the same balls (these are very specific Kong Squeezz balls that squeak) and would bring 2 or 3 out to play. At first, he would bring the one back and drop to throw the second one. That lasted for about 2 weeks and now whatever toy is in his mouth holds higher value than the one I have in my hand. If you do 2 different toys of equal value, still the one in his mouth is higher value than the one you have in your hand. He might go one round where he drops it and goes to get the other one, but it rarely goes beyond that.

Also, if he is asking to play, but won't drop the ball, he gets ignored. When he gets ignored, he will go drop the ball in my chair at work (so I will throw it) but only if its on HIS terms. He will drop the ball in my chair for me all day long and let me pick it up and throw it but as soon as someone asks, its a NO go.

I know I am rambling so I will end this and answer questions if I have missed something.

Leonard Nimoy: 'Star Trek' Star Dead at 83

Feb 27, 2015, 12:33 PM ET

By MICHAEL ROTHMAN, MICHAEL KREISEL and LESLEY MESSERMichael Rothman More from Michael »

Entertainment Reporter

LA Mayor: Nimoy 'Lived Long and Prospered'

Leonard Nimoy, known for his iconic character Mr. Spock on "Star Trek," has died, ABC News has confirmed via the actor's granddaughter. He was 83.

Nimoy, who played first officer to William Shatner's Captain Kirk on the Starship Enterprise in TV and movies, died Friday morning in Bel-Air, California, his granddaughter Madeleine Nimoy confirmed to ABC News today.

His son Adam told the $#@!ociated Press that he died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The actor revealed he was struggling with the ailment in 2014, according to the New York Times. Nimoy had been a smoker, which contributed to the ailment, before he gave up the habit years ago.

“I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD ... Smokers, please understand. If you quit after you’re diagnosed with lung damage it’s too late. Grandpa says learn my lesson. Quit now. LLAP,” Nimoy tweeted in separate posts last year.

Earlier this week, Nimoy tweeted for the last time, writing, "A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP," signing the tweet with his iconic phrase "Live Long and Prosper."

"I loved him like a brother. We will all miss his humor, his talent, and his capacity to love," his "Star Trek" co-star William Shatner said in a tweet.

Flowers will be placed on his star in on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 10:30 a.m. PT, officials said.

PHOTO: Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock in the Star Trek episode, "Spock's Brain" which aired on September 20, 1968.

Nimoy -- a United States Army veteran, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts -- first began acting at the age of 8 locally, then in the early 1950's, staring in TV runs, such as "The Silent Service," "Broken Arrow" and "Dragnet." But it was his debut as Mr. Spock in the 1960's "Star Trek" that made him a cult legend.

He first brought Mr. Spock to the screen in 1966 for the original "Star Trek" pilot, a character he played on TV until 1969. He would go on to star in eight movies and build a cult following as the half human, half Vulcan famous for his hand gesture that meant "Live Long and Prosper."

After a long and successful career since the beginning of "Trek," Nimoy had brought back his famous role in 2009's reboot "Star Trek," and the recent sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" in 2013. Zachary Quinto played a younger version of Spock.

In an interview with StarTrek.com, Nimoy expressed his gratitude to reboot director J.J. Abrams for bringing him back to honor him in the new series.

"I think he’s done a great thing for Star Trek. I’m very grateful to him. We all owe him a lot. When someone comes along like he has done and picks it up and elevates it, we should be grateful. So when J.J. calls me, I take the call," he said.

But Nimoy was more than just an actor -- starring as of late as a voice in 2011's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" and as Dr. William Bell in another cult classic series "Fringe." Nimoy began his career as an acting teacher in his early 20's in Hollywood, and more recently the author of his autobiographies, "I Am Not Spock" in 1975 and "I Am Spock" in 1995.

In addition to his over 130 acting credits, Nimoy had a dozen directing credits, including the 1987 hit "3 Men and a Baby," starring Tom Selleck and Ted Danson and a couple "Star Trek" movies. Nimoy also starred as himself in hits like "Futurama," "Ancient Mysteries" and "In Search of..." as a host in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

Somewhere in the middle of all his success, Nimoy went back to school and earned a master’s degree in Spanish from Antioch University Austin in his 40's, then later an honorary doctorate, according to the Times.

Nimoy was married twice - once to actoress Sandra Zober from 1954 to 1987 and most recently to Susan Bay from 1989 till his death. He is father to Julie and Adam Nimoy. His son, 58, followed in his famous father's footsteps, directing episodes on "NYPD Blue," "Gilmore Girls" and "The Practice."

Nimoy is survived by his wife Susan Bay and his two children, Adam and Julie.

When we last checked in with the Town of Islip Animal Shelter in NY, it was to report on one of the employees there pocketing hundreds of dollars in cash from a pet owner who wanted to rehome her two little dogs. *Instead of taking the dogs to the shelter as promised, the employee tied one dog up in a garbage bag and left her in a dumpster while turning the other pet loose on the street. *He was charged with felony animal cruelty. *I don*t know the status on that case. *This week, the Town of Islip Animal Shelter again made the news and again, not in a good way.

Lucky, as pictured on the CBS2 website.

The owners of an eight year old*King Charles Cavalier called Lucky had to leave the country to care for a terminally ill family member. *They left Lucky with a dog sitter but he somehow got lost and was taken to the Islip facility. *The dog sitter attempted to reclaim the dog but was turned away. *Friends of the family also attempted to intervene but they too were refused. *At issue was proof of ownership:

The shelter released a statement on its Facebook page Monday, saying “Since the dog has no form of ID, no tags or microchip, their is no proof of ownership. Legally we have to put the dog up for adoption after being held for 5 days if no owner steps up.”

[…]

According to the*Islip Animal Shelter, to properly claim one’s dog the owner needs to go to the shelter in person with photo ID and proof of ownership. The owner*should also have veterinary information,*medical records and family photos.

While this sounds like a fair policy in general, it seem obvious that not everyone is going to be able to meet all these requirements** especially if the person reclaiming the pet is a temporary caretaker and the actual owners are on another continent. Each individual case should be processed with due consideration given to the circumstances at hand.

Lucky*s owners called the shelter to plead for their pet*s return but to no avail. *The shelter*s statement verifies that staff did speak with the owners:

“We*do know who the owner is, and that they are out of the country. They have been contacted and they have been made aware that the dog will be put up for adoption and placed with a good home.”

What the effing eff? *How is this not just plain evil? *We know who the owner is but screw them, they just pay our salaries. *And screw the dog too. *We*re going to break up this family. *Because that*s what animal sheltering is all about.

I can*t help but notice that Lucky is a purebred dog of a very popular breed. *It makes me wonder if Islip is one of those places that charges extra for certain “high demand” pets. *Is Islip this stringent on proof of ownership for every mangy shepherd mix and lame*pitbull whose owners or caretakers try to reclaim them?

Lucky*s friends contacted the local news which aired a story and made the rounds on social media. *Public outcry was swift. *And the next day, the shelter was shamed into*returning Lucky to his caretaker. *Thank you irresponsible public for demanding the Islip shelter workers do their jobs and for advocating for Lucky while he was being held prisoner by these people.

What the hell goes on at the Islip facility when the news cameras are not around? *How many other owned pets have been stolen by Islip? *I bet every heartbroken owner who ever lost a pet in this town and resigned themselves to life without their family member is now wondering if Islip might have had their animal. *Something is seriously wrong with this place.

(Thanks to everyone who sent me this story.)

Itchy feet

I know everyone is probably sick of allergy threads, but my poor dog is chewing her feet raw and I'm at a loss. We did go to the vet and she was checked out for fungus and all the other fun stuff and we left with an "allergies" diagnosis.

While giving Sookie a good bath and brushing today I found her skin to be quite dry and brushing created white dandruf. Despite the dry skin the chewing and obvious irritation is limited to the paws.

Gr$#@! has not been treated with anything since I moved in (September or so I believe) and the landlord said he was never told the last renter did anything (he also had a dog though which I would $#@!ume would make someone not want to chemicle their yard). I've also washed all bedding, mopped my floors, and in general done the crazy cleaning thing on anything I can think of indoors that may cause irritation on her feet.

The obvious irritation of the feet makes me think environmental but because of the dry skin I wonder if food allergies might be a problem anyway; she's eating Taste of the Wild kibble (we are 3 weeks into a switch from the high prairie formula to pacific stream: the issue is my reason for trying a new formula), and while I've considered switching to a new brand I've never been sure what else I can get that high of quality and still only spend about $28 on a bag every 3 weeks.

Any knowledge ya'll could send my way? I'm not sure what's my best course of action at this point.

Word of the Day: rationale

jeudi 26 février 2015

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 27, 2015 is:

rationale • \rash-uh-NAL\ • noun

1 : an explanation of controlling principles of opinion, belief, practice, or phenomena 2 : an underlying reason : basis

Examples:

The newspaper's editorial reflected the concerns of many who questioned the rationale behind the mayor's decision.

"… the sacred trust that elected officials will share all options they've explored, identify the ones they haven't, and share the rationale behind their decisions." — Robert F. Walsh, Stratford (Connecticut) Star, January 29, 2015

Did you know?

The word rationale appeared in the second half of the 17th century, just in time for the Age of Reason. It is based on the Latin ratio, which means "reason," and rationalis, which means "endowed with reason." At first, rationale meant "an explanation of controlling principles" ("a rationale of religious practices," for example), but soon it began to refer to the underlying reason for something (as in "the rationale for her behavior"). The latter meaning is now the most common use of the term. The English word ratio can also mean "underlying reason" (in fact, it had this meaning before rationale did), but in current use, that word more often refers to the relationship (in number, quantity, or degree) between things.

Why must you chew on everything!!!

Well, tomorrow will be Adonis' first unplanned away from home vet visit 😧

A little background to how this happened is in order. Adonis and crates don't seem to get along. His separation anxiety only gets worse when he's in his crate. If I'm home, he loves the thing and will go inside no problem. If I leave the room, just the room not even the house, he freaks out and goes on a cage rattling rampage, usually escaping and hurting himself in the process. If I don't put him in his crate he waits patiently on my bed for me to come back. I don't like leaving him loose to run amok so that left me with quite a dilemma, crate him and risk him cutting his face open or leave him loose? I chose neither, I bought a strong tether and attached it to the leg of his bed/couch at a position where he couldn't get hung up on anything and could reach his water and nothing else. He was doing great on it and we hadn't had any problems until today. I got through two of my cl$#@! and came home to shower him with love and take him on a potty break only to see that the tether was somehow no longer on the leg of his bed. It was probably a human error because there's no way he worked it free on his own. He had gotten into my trash can and apparently found delight in everything...including a battery. He didn't eat it, he just bit into and apparently realized his mistake pretty quickly leaving it alone on my floor. It was an old battery so I don't think there was much juice in it but what little there was did some damage. I guess it's just now taking an effect because he seemed fine until around 30 minutes ago. I honestly thought that since since the battery was old and he didn't look injured that he was okay, I was definitely wrong. He was asleep in my bed and I accidentally woke him up and when he lifted his head I noticed a huge drool puddle on my comforter as well as the longest string of drool I've ever seen hanging from his lip. I grabbed a towel to wipe it off because he didn't seem all there and that's when I noticed the black stuff coming off on the towel. So I've been flushing his mouth with water and now there isn't any stuff coming off on the towel. I've been looking to see what vet I'm taking him to tomorrow and I probably won't go to cl$#@! in the morning so I can keep an eye on him until I can get him there.

I'm so aggravated with myself right now. Whether I saw anything when I checked the first time or not I should've gone ahead and got him to the vet. He ate fine and was his normal goofy self so I thought he was okay. I'm not really looking for any help with anything at the moment, I just felt like sharing my mistake with you guys. I'm just worried that I really $#@!ed up this time, he's gotten into crap before but nothing that's ever hurt him before. I think he's in a bit of pain (well duh) and I'm trying to make him comfortable but he doesn't want to hang out with me at the moment, he's a little upset about me flushing his mouth.

Quick question, should I continue flushing his mouth throughout the night? I don't mind staying up all night with him but I think he's gonna get tired of me looking in his mouth every 10 minutes if I do.

Why must you chew on everything!!!

Updated pictures of Adonis

Adonis is starting to look a little fit and I figured I'd share some of my favorite pics. I think he's looking pretty good for a mutt that was neutered at 6 months old.

I can't tell if that's muscle over his ribs or not but either way he looks nice, especially since we've been cooped up due to the horribly cold weather. Barely any exercise and he's maintaining a nice shape.

A few park pictures from when my boyfriend visited. They had so much fun running around and I finally got some decent pictures of him running around playing. It's nearly impossible to get them when I'm by myself.

I can't wait until it warms up so we can start getting out regularly again. I can only imagine how he'll look once he's actually getting real exercise 😆

Purina Beneful

We just put Chevy on Purina Beneful two weeks ago , & He has been vomiting A LOT lately its very unusual of him ... & then I read this !?

To the vet we will be going for a "Just in case" check up ! :no2::pray:

According to ABC News, Beneful, made by Nestle Purina, has been facing complaints for years. Tampa lawyer James Young said lawyers across the country banded together when they began connecting the dots.

"It's all Beneful dog food. That's the common denominator," Young told ABC. "Statistically speaking, the fact that this many dogs were affected by the same brand of dog food is pretty compelling."

The lawsuit focuses on the case of Frank Lucido's three dogs. He began feeding the dogs Beneful after relocating them to three distinct environments while his home was being renovated.

Shortly after starting the diet, his 4-year-old German shepherd started to lose her fur and smell strange. She soon became ill, and was found to be bleeding internally and suffering from a malfunctioning liver. She survived but still has health problems.

Five days later, his 8-year-old English bulldog was found dead in the yard with the same internal bleeding and liver problems.

Lucido's last dog, an 11-year-old Labrador, has also been "unwell," according to the complaint, and is undergoing testing.

The lawsuit, filed in California, claims that more than 3,000 complaints from "similarly situated" dog owners have been made against Beneful over the last four years.

"When there's been a crescendo of complaints you have to pay attention," Jeffrey B. Cereghino, a lawyer representing Lucido, told NBC News

The suit claims that toxins found in Beneful, specifically propylene glycol and mycotoxins, are to blame for poisoning the dogs.

Mycotoxins are produced by mold found in the grains used in Beneful. They pose a health risk to dogs, and the reported symptoms are consistent with those of mycotoxin poisoning, the lawsuit claims.

Propylene glycol is "an FDA-approved food additive that is also in human foods like salad dressing and cake mix," according to Purina. But the chemical is also found in antifreeze, and has caused some concerns in the past.

For example, in October, Fireball Cinnamon Whisky was recalled in Europe when it was discovered that levels of propylene glycol used as sweetener were out of compliance.

Young and his colleagues are looking into whether other ingredients found in Beneful could harm the dogs, but Purina issued a statement claiming "there are no quality issues with Beneful."

"We believe the lawsuit is baseless, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves and our brand," the statement said. "Beneful had two previous cl$#@! action suits filed in recent years with similar baseless allegations, and both were dismissed by the courts."

In one of those lawsuits, settled in May, Purina and Waggin' Train LLC created a $6.5 million fund to compensate pet owners who claimed their animals were harmed after eating jerky treats made in China. The treats in question had been recalled in January 2013.

Beneful downplayed the complaints as a result of online rumors in a statement to NBC:

"Like other pet foods, Beneful is occasionally the subject of social media-driven misinformation. On-line postings often contain false, unsupported and misleading allegations that cause undue concern and confusion for our Beneful customers."

Nestle Purina has until April 2 to respond to the cl$#@! action complaint, which asks for unspecified actual statutory and punitive damages for Lucido and other members of the cl$#@! action lawsuit.

Charlie wants to kill all tortoises - help urgently needed!

Hi guys. This is my first post here. I warn you, it is long.

Charlie is the third dog we've ever owned (we currently just have 2, including him), and our first pit bull. We've had him since June, he's a year old, and although he hasn't been 100% perfect (as puppies typically aren't), I (and occasionally my mom) have been training with him extensively since November and he has shaped up into a pretty great dog. We take him for walks downtown once a week and we always get compliments on how beautiful and well-behaved he is. He still has his moments, of course (he gets some crazy cases of the zoomies), but overall, he's wonderful. We adore him.

But we have one big, big problem and we just can't find a solution for it. Charlie hates tortoises. He hates them. He wants to kill them all. And, unfortunately for us, we live in an area replete with, you guessed it, tortoises. They are constantly roaming around the yard. And if we, god forbid, forget to do a turtle scan before taking him out, it is ON. He goes into a blind frenzy, whining hysterically, scrambling and pulling and just generally being a nightmare. Now, my parents both work during the day, so my little sis and I are alone from 9-5. In a normal circumstance, my sister is at least around so that, if there's a tortoise in the yard that Charlie goes after, she can come out and I can hold him back until she puts it on the other side of the fence where he can't get it.

But yesterday, of course, my sister had gone out with my grandparents for lunch, and I was alone. I was hanging out with Charlie, having a pretty nice time with him, and I decided to take him for a walk around the yard so he could go potty. We hadn't seen a tortoise in a while, so I stupidly figured it was safe. And he was doing really, really well as we were walking around. He was just being really chill and obedient and totally great. Until he saw a tortoise. It was eating gr$#@! about 10 feet away; because of the palmetto, we hadn't been able to see it until we were right there on top of it.

As soon as he saw it, I knew it was over. He immediately went into a frenzy, and I tried to remain calm and yank him away, but he was only wearing a generic cloth collar--normally, he would have had his pinch on--and it did nothing. There really are no words to describe the next 15 minutes that ensued, other than "one of the worst experiences of my life thus far." I'm a 16 year old female, less than 120lbs, slightly anemic so I'm pretty weak. I am no match against a pit bull hellbent on murdering a tortoise. And there was nobody home to help me.

I held that leash so tight, the inside of my middle finger is skinned. I can't bend it. My arms are so sore, I can't even hold them above my head. At one point, I just jumped on top of him and held him down to give the tortoise a chance to get away, but the poor thing was just sitting there, petrified, in its shell. Charlie DRAGGED me across the dry gr$#@! to get to it and my knees are shredded. They feel better this morning, but last night, it hurt to even walk. I tried shouting for my neighbor, but he didn't hear.

I was on the brink of passing out when I finally got him away from that tortoise. Until then, I had had two other ideas: either I just keep him moving until he tires himself out and collapses, or I let the leash go. Every time I dragged him away, he would throw himself back wildly and I was so afraid that the collar was gonna slip right over his head. But eventually, after many failed attempts, I did get him to the point where he could no longer see the tortoise behind him and after that, it was like nothing had ever happened. He was right back to obedient, chill Charlie. Just panting a lot.

I held myself together up until we got into the house. I dropped the leash and bawled my eyes out. I grabbed the phone to call my grandmother--I dialed the number 6 times because my trembling made me unable to press the right buttons--and I was crying so hard she couldn't make out what I was saying. She thought that he'd bitten me badly and rushed home.

She got home shortly thereafter and I had calmed down enough to relay to her the accurate story, which she was relieved to hear. She helped me clean the wounds better (just scratches and scrapes from being dragged across the ground) and we did let Charlie out of crate to make sure the tortoise hadn't bitten him and he was not injured but very meek, very meager. I think my distress in the aftermath of the incident really shook him up. I wish I had handled myself better, but at that point, I was just done.

Nobody is mad at Charlie. I'm not mad at Charlie. Nobody thinks he's a bad dog now. In all other respects, he is a very, very good dog. He has some DA, really only when he feels threatened/challenged, but we know his triggers, his limits, and it's very easy to get him to simmer down. He's friendly towards people. He loves our other dog and he loves the rottie next door. We have chickens, and they run around in a fenced-in area, and he has no issues with them. He doesn't have much interest in squirrels and rabbits. But if he spots a tortoise, even across the street, he goes ballistic. And none of us can figure out why, or what to do. We relocate them (the tortoises), but they come back. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Toenail amputation

Hello,

My 3 1/2 year pitty, Dahli keeps getting split toenails, which are very painful for her. Last year she got two, I added mol$#@! to her diet gave her aspirin and kept them clean, they grew back just fine. Two more have split this year, they're always on the front paws, and it only happens in the winter. I'm wondering if it might be easier for her to get the trouble toenails amputated. I'm going to have to bring her to the vet this time, it's been over a month since one split and the fleshy inside of the quick is totally exposed, no sign of healing.

I still haven't found a vet since we moved over a year ago. Does anyone know what an average price for amputation is? If they do recommend it, I want to have an idea of what a standard price is so I can tell if the vet cares more about profit than they do about animals being well.

Has anyone here also dealt with this? What do you recommend?

In 2009, a woman wrote a letter to Klein Animal Shelter in Texas and sent copies to the AC offices in the cities of Jacksonville and Tyler as well as Smith Co * all of which contracted with Klein. In the letter, she mourned the needless death of a kitten she had adopted from Klein. Klein sold her as a 9 week old kitten but the adopter*s vet said she was actually a severely malnourished 4 month old. The kitten, named Twiggy by the adopter, succumbed to the effects of starvation just 4 days after the adoption. In the letter, the woman asked that Klein re-examine its practices and stated that Twiggy would have been better off on the street than at Klein. In 2015, three employees of the facility were arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

Case update: *Two ACOs from Orange Co, CA who slit an injured deer*s throat while refusing help from a veterinarian at the scene have been fired from their jobs. *The DA declined to bring charges against either man. *(Thank you Clarice for the link.)

Case update: *In an agreement with prosecutors, the animal cruelty charges against the former director of the Hunterdon Co Humane Animal Shelter in NJ will be dropped in 12 months so long as she gives up managerial control of the facility and agrees to other unnamed conditions. *She will remain on the board and continue fundraising for the wealthy organization. *(Thanks Clarice.)

Two of the dogs “rescued” from the troubled Helmetta pound in NJ were sent to the Humane Society of Harrisburg Area where they were reportedly killed for behavior despite evaluations from a behaviorist who determined the dogs were not aggressive outside their cages. (Thanks Clarice.)

An ACO from the Memphis pound was called to help stray dogs living at an abandoned property near Mayor Wharton*s home. *One of the dogs was reportedly in desperate need of veterinary care. *The ACO initially refused to do her job and only finally removed the one dying dog after an animal advocated begged her for help. *But when the local news called the mayor*s office about the story, Memphis ACOs were quickly sent to the property where they captured one dog and set traps for the remainder. *The ACOs will supposedly monitor the traps so the dogs don*t suffer and/or freeze to death in the inclement weather. *(Thanks to everyone who sent me this story.)

Hunt Co, TX * Some manly man with a gun shot his neighbor*s two dogs when they came into his yard, photographed their bodies, then bragged about it on Facebook. *He has been suspended from his job with the Union Valley Fire Department and a county constable is investigating the case. *(Thanks Mike.)
