I Want To Learn More About Pit Bulls

mardi 24 février 2015

So I discovered this forum while doing research on the pit bull and I am seeking to learn more.

I have an interest in pit bulls for several reason. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and foster dogs and pit bulls along with pit bull mixes and other bully breeds were extemely common. At one shelter, I would say that about 70% of the dogs there were some bully mix. I have also on several occassions considered adopting pit bull mixes, but wisely decided not to because I knew I was uneducated and did not have enough training experience. And lastly (no ridicule please) I have had reoccuring dreams about pit bulls for the last 8 years or so. Up to this point in my life they are one of the most common symbols in my dreams.

So essentially, I don't know if I will ever own a pit bull, but I want to learn more. I have read through this forum and I have learned quite a lot already, but I'm a book person and I was wondering if some members could recommend some good ones. Also, if anyone can point me in the direction of any reliable studies, I would be thankful.

I also want to say that I really appreciate how educated everyone is here. I have read several different pit bull advocacy sites and there are a lot of myths I have seen debunked here including "it's how you raise them" and "they used to be nanny dogs". I was wondering if some members can tell me how these myths got started? I have heard the same lines repeated over and over again in the media and by friends. How is it that the history of the pit bull has been so miscontrued? Why do you think this misinformation is so widely believed?

Again, I want to thank anyone posting a response. I am open to all info on all bully breeds, but specifically the pit bull. I have a great love for the dogs, but can't say I will ever own one as I rescue small dogs and I know that pits are DA.
