Finally ready for a dog, but...

Totally indecisive about where to go about obtaining one. I'm sure that's a hint I should probably wait a while before actually finding a pup, but since my GSD passed away from DM last year I've just been absolutely depressed about not having my own dog [which is also absolutely vital to sustaining my mental health]. I plan on probably importing a GSD at some point from actually reputable breeders, not interested in genetic diseases again, but I'd really like to finally get myself a bulldog now. I just have no clue from whom or where. Bully breeds are a dime in a dozen in shelters, I could easily go out and adopt one. But I'm also really iffy about getting another dog with unknown genetics. I live in SC, there are plenty of yards here I'm sure I could find if I did some looking, but honestly I'm not too impressed with what I've been seeing from some 'working bred' dogs... People breeding dogs with pretty papers who have done absolutely nothing and peddling them off. I guess my choice after that would be to just go with a good reputable working/showing breeder. That's another reason why I'm iffy about just finding a dog at a shelter- I plan on doing as many sports/activities as I can with this dog. I need a dog with guaranteed health, guaranteed drive. I want as few surprises as possible. Considering I work with animals for a living, an extremely trainable and drivey dog is something I need to help finally get myself involved in the professional training industry if we end up competing well.

But yeah wondering if anyone else has been in this situation of indecisiveness about where to get their bully breed? I've been dying to get my bulldog for 6+ years now, used to go to a lot of shows and $#@!, and probably would try conformation again if I got this dog. But still, lots of perfectly nice dogs who could use a home from rescue?
