Hector the Pit Bull fights new battle

In the end, it’s not the years in your life that counts, it’s the life in your years.And for his 9 years on Earth, make that 61 in dog years, Hector the pit bull has seen enough for many lifetimes.
“Most of the scars are on his chest. He’s got a few on his legs,” Clara Yori, Hector’s owner, said.
One of 51 dogs rescued from Michael Vick’s dog fighting ring, he has made his home in Rochester for the past 6 years with Roo and Clara Yori, a couple of college sweethearts from St. Mary’s University in Winona.
“I was skeptical a little bit. Just things like I was worried that he wouldn’t get along with our other dogs — because it didn’t make sense to me that he would. But he did,” Clara said.
Since his adoption, Hector became a certified therapy dog, visiting local nursing homes and hospitals, all the while disproving every misconception about pit bulls.
“He loves people. Loves kids. He’s wonderful to other dogs.”
A small glimpse into his past life does make an appearance every once in a while.
“When he first came into our house, Clara would look over and all of a sudden he’s standing on the dinning room table. So it’s like all right we gotta teach you that it’s not the top of your dog house in the yard,” Roo Yori said.
After surviving unthinkable circumstances, the struggle for the incredible animal is not over yet.
“It all kind of started with Michael Vick. I mean a lot of the dogs from that case has a blood parasite called babesia. We were thinking of starting a new treatment for that, cause he wasn’t doing that well and that’s when they found that he had cancer.”
Hector is battling a particularly aggressive form of cancer and has been given only weeks, if not days, left to live.
“He’s got cancer all over his liver and his lungs. It was pretty fast moving because a few months ago, we did an abdominal ultrasound and everything was clear. Then we went back month ago and it was all over,” Clara said.
The Yoris have made two appointments to put Hector down but cancelled both — electing to leave that decision up to Hector and fate.
“Could be any day now. But we figured, just gonna let him when that time is right,” Clara said.
Hector is a part of their family now, and will spend his last days on Earth playing in the gr$#@!, trying to make new friends and soaking up the warm autumn sunshine.
“I think he did what he had to do while he was there. But once he got the chance to get out then he’s just like all right I can stay who I am and never look back,” Roo said.
