So Bentley (10 years old) has never been clicker trained but I'm starting it with him now.
My end goal with him is paw targeting.
But since we're just beginning, I'm starting easy so he understands (in theory) what the clicker is. So right now we're just doing "sit" and "down" and repeating for a few min and then stopping.
My issue is that I will try to move to a different movement (give paw, without a command). When he does the movement, I click and treat with a "good boy". He does fine for a couple reps. But after a couple reps, when I click, he jumps back like he's afraid of the clicker.
Obviously I don't want him to think I'm rewarding the fear so I drop back to just "sit" and "down" commands. Then he's fine again.
He's sensitive about his feet. I don't grab and hold the feet when paws. When his foot touches my hand, I click and treat.
My question is, am I doing something wrong? Has anyone ever experienced this with a dog that's new to clicker training?
