Hi there, I have a quick question about my dog suddenly trying to snap at someone.
I adopted a three year old male pit last year from the shelter, and from the moment I got him he has been the sweetest, most affectionate and loyal dog. He has never once shown aggression towards humans (only cats) or other dogs.
However, today we were at petsmart picking out a jacket for our walks and while we were in the checkout a woman walked up to him, got down on his level, and started petting his face. Then she rubbed her face on his..... I saw he looked uncomfortable so I began to put myself inbetween them and tightened my grip on his leash. Then he showed his teeth and growled at her! When she backed away he pulled towards her growling too. I immediately told him no, and put him on his back (something he normally automatically does if he's done something naughty). He sat there and gave me sad eyes for a minute and slowly got back up and sat down by my side and stared at the floor until it was time to go.
What on earth happened? He's used to me messing with his face, paws, mouth.. you name it. I have done my best at socializing him with as many people as I can and hope to continue to take him places with me... but what happened toady definitely makes me nervous for future outings.
I know that since he is a shelter dog, I don't know what his past experiences were and what type of situations can make him change like that, however, regardless of what happened he should never show aggression like that.
Any suggestions on what I should do to prevent this in the future? Did I handle the situation correctly? We have been to private training cl$#@! and he is decently trained and listens to me.
