STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A West Brighton man abandoned three pit bulls, one of them a puppy, alone in his home for more than two months without food or water, police allege.
Robert Chase, 57, left the dogs -- Kimba, 7, Junior, who is also named Dylan, 2, and Baby Girl, 8 months -- alone in his residence on the 100 block of Dongan Street between Aug. 1 and Oct. 15, according to police.
Chase didn't provide them with any food or water and left them loose to roam, police allege. In one instance, one of the dogs bit a worker at a nearby construction site, law enforcement sources said.
Kimba had to be put down because she was too aggressive, law enforcement sources said.
"I own them, they're my dogs," Chase told police, according to a criminal complaint against him. "The reason why I left my home (is) because I couldn't pay my bills and theirs."
A 22-year-old squatter had been living in the basement, law enforcement sources said.
Public records show Chase owns the house. He was arrested Friday at his mother's home on Bement Avenue, according to a police source.
A next-door neighbor, Jeanderson Da Silva, told the Advance Monday night that both he and his 92-year-old landlord have been menaced by the dogs in recent weeks.
Not long after the incident with the construction worker, Da Silva said, two of the dogs chased them out of their own yards.
"I was picking up my wife from the ferry. She works in the city. As we come over here, the dogs just chase us out, two of them," Da Silva said.
A witness spotted Junior and Kimba running loose on Nov. 4, according to the criminal court complaint, and on Nov. 10, an NYPD detective found Baby Girl inside. Her rib cage and the bones around her hind legs were protruding from under her skin, according to the compliant.
An ASPCA doctor, Laura Niestat, examined Junior and found he was emaciated as "a result of prolonged period of inadequate nutrition over weeks to possibly months," the complaint alleges.
ASPCA spokeswoman Natasha Whitling confirmed Monday night that one of the dogs was euthanized.
"Three pit bulls showing signs of neglect were brought to the ASPCA by the NYPD. One of the dogs exhibited highly aggressive behavior and euthanasia was recommended as the most humane option. The other two dogs remain in our care. This is still an open case and we cannot comment further at this time," Ms. Whitling said.
Chase has been charged with two counts of torturing and injuring animals, and three counts of abandonment of animals, all misdemeanors, according to information from District Attorney Daniel Donovan's office.
He was arraigned Friday in Stapleton Criminal Court and ordered released on his own recognizance until his next court date on Jan. 5.
Attempts to reach him Monday were unsuccessful.
