My four year old, spayed female, Marra Mayhem (she was holy terror when she was a pup lol) is beginning to do something I'm a bit concerned about, though I'm not sure if I should be or if I'm just an overprotective mom.
I bought her at 8 weeks from a breeder friend of mine. I know both her mother and father and they're wonderful dogs.
First let me say she's a very laid back, i love you, let me lick your face off, loveable lunatic as long as myself or a member of the household lets you in. If you try to enter the yard or home without being invited, watch out. She has never bitten, but rushed the fence snarling when a family friend started to open it, I called her to me, yelled at him to close the fence, and he did. I put her on lead and opened the fence myself to let him in and she was all tail wags and kisses. This is her nature, I did not train her that way and she has been socialized properly. She loves the people we meet out on walks, especially children and will sit and let them pet her all day if i let her.
She has a high prey drive and her dog agression is hard to cl$#@!. Some dogs she likes, others she doesnt. This has gotten worse as she's gotten older, and I'm aware of it and take all precautions.
She is an inside dog, but when in the yard unsupervised I have her on a cable dog run, as she will jump the fence to chase small animals or.. horses.. strangely enough. If I'm outside with her which I usually am she has full run of the yard (an acre) as she will come to me immediatly when I call, no matter the distraction.
Ok basics given, here's the possible problem. Over the past year or so she's begun to show phobia to certain noises. She is NOT skittish in the least though. if something spooks her, her reaction is to run a few steps from it, turn around and come right back and boldly give it a good inspection and sniffing. What gets her is thunder, the washing machine if the load is unballanced (doesnt happen often) and fireworks. When encountering those noises she either tries to cling to my side shivering, which I do not allow as the vet says it only reinforces her fear, or she does what I'm going to tell her to do when she clings, lays on her bed under the desk. If the storm is especially bad she may pace and whine a bit before obeying the "go to your bed" command.
My concern is if this a beginning symptom of a greater problem, such as becoming skittish and possibly a fear biter.
So, your thoughts please?
p.s. she is in excellent health so its not a medical issue.
