So Kobi is pushing 3 years of age now and over the last couple months, I have noticed he has started guarding things a bit more.
In August of 2013 I had moved to San Diego and left Kobi behind so I could find housing that would allow him to be here, he stayed with my brother for about 10 months. I had went back home in June of 2014 and stayed there for some time off for 2 months before returning to San Diego in August. While I was back home, Kobi and I had stayed with a friend and his 4 kids and Kobi had a blast with them. They had another dog which had me feed Kobi away from him because Kobi would start lunging at the other dog if the dog came near his food. I was aware then that he would need to be fed away from the other dog. Kobi would be fine eating from his bowl if other people were around (even the kids).
Now that I am in San Diego, he eats in my bedroom. I live with 2 other adults and 3 kids and 1 other dog. During the days I am at work and I just close Kobi in my room, or sometimes leave the door open so that he can roam the house an interact with people if they are home - if not, he is confined to the bedroom. Because of the other dog I will feed Kobi in the bedroom and he gets other treats to keep him occupied while he is enclosed in the bedroom (Stuffed Kong ect.). About a month ago, one of the kids came to my bedroom door like they often do, and started telling me about their day (I have lived with this family for years and watched these kids grow up). Kobi jumped up and went to his food bowl and just stood there until the child left. If he is downstairs where the other dog bowl is and there is food in it, he doesn't really pay any attention to it if the kids come around, it seems to only be in the bedroom. Even if there is not food down in my bedroom, he will stand up and hover over a horn, a nyla-bone, a rubber ball, or even just go by his empty bowl. I have heard him let out a couple urfs/grumbles lately as well.
Needless to say, I am pretty concerned. I am not entirely sure if this has something to do with all of his feeding and treating happening in the bedroom or if it is just something that will spill over regardless of what area of the house he is in. Right now it seems like behavior confined to the bedroom area though. I have taken the initiative to move his bowl and such into the walk in closet but it has not really done much. I am afraid to move it to another room in the house lest he immediately carries the behavior into the common area.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I have the kids help me with training periodically and they give him treats a lot and everything is fine, but I would hate for that to suddenly not be the case.
I was going to see if I could maybe switch rooms with someone and then just not give him anything in that room, but idk.
