Setting up winter work space- help?

samedi 8 novembre 2014

Hello all-

Here on the Oregon coast, it's almost sideways rain season. :winter_smilies_0012So, I'm working on our basement to set up a good workout place for Griffin. I want to be sure what I do is safe and effective, and I'd love some help!

I have an electric human treadmill, which he loves walking on. I haven't pushed him too much, to keep it fun and easy. Griffin is 14 months old, so I think maybe he can start working out on it more intensely? Our usual routine is to walk at 2-2.5 mph, with some inclines and flat, for about 5 minutes. Then, I turn it up to 3.5 mph, which puts him at a medium trot, for 5 minutes. Then, we cool down for another 5, and he also has to practice walking really slow, since that's a skill he needs to be better at in real life.

Is this a good routine- can he do more, or should he do less? I understand I shouldn't run him on it, but at the trot, his gait seems pretty natural, he doesn't run out of room on the belt.

I'm also wanting to set up a spring pole. My house sits on steel I-beams, so my plan was to loop a chain over one, and use carabiners to attach a spring and a rope to that. Griffin is a big guy, he's 70 lbs, so what's a good weight rating to look for in all those parts? I saw one thread talked about porch swing springs, are they strong enough for my planned setup?

I'm also wondering how high the setup should be for him to grab it. At his age, is it still 4 on the floor, or can he reach up for it a bit? Finally, the floor is concrete, so should I put a rug or some padding in that area?

Thanks for whatever help anyone has!
