Word of the Day: emigrate

mercredi 31 décembre 2014

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 01, 2015 is:

emigrate • \EM-uh-grayt\ • verb

: to leave one's place of residence or country to live elsewhere

Examples:

"… graduates and skilled technical workers are also emigrating, usually with a plan to save up for a few years and then return." — The Economist, November 5, 2013

"I needed work and I had a friend whose dad and grandfather were in the shoe-repair business. The grandfather, a shoe builder, had emigrated from Hungary and had a shop at Lloyd Center in Portland, and I went to work for them." — Ron Wells, quoted in The Columbian (Vancouver, Washington), December 1, 2014

Did you know?

Migrate, emigrate, and immigrate are all about being on the move. All those terms come from the Latin word migrare, which means "to move from one place to another." Emigrate and immigrate sound alike, and it is true that both involve leaving one location and entering another. The subtle difference between them lies in point of view: emigrate stresses leaving the original place, while immigrate focuses on entering the new one. You won't have trouble keeping them straight if you remember that the prefix e- means "away," as in eject, and the prefix im- or in- means "into," as in inject.

Iris and Koda Finally Meet

My sister was away today and needed Koda let out to do his business so I figured it would be a good chance to finally get him and Iris a bit more familiar with each other. They've done their kisses through the fence a lot in the last few weeks and have been happy to see each other so I expected it to go well. Initially he was a bit put off by Iris's energy and how rambunctious she can be, but he warmed up to her and she figured out that he's not quite wrestling size yet. Fuzzy bugger is getting damn big in a hurry though. I'm going to try and get them together every couple of days so he'll eventually play with Iris the way he does with Bailey. I'm really looking forward to Iris having a friend right next door.

Happy New Year Casper!!!

I've had Casper for almost 4 months now! In some respects it seems like he's been a part of our family for much longer and in others it feels like I brought him home just yesterday! From a 3lb sickly little puppy to the 30lb beautiful boy he's grown into and I'm just so happy to have him in my home. This is his photo comparison from 7 weeks when I got him to 22 weeks(taken tonight) And yes, that is the same pillow in both pictures haha! Happy New Year to everyone! Can't wait to see what 2015 brings!

No Surprise: TNR Works

A new study shows TNR works. OK, you know that. That is neither a controversial nor new finding. In so many ways, it may even seem mundane. But the study will be very helpful to you as you advocate for TNR/SNR in your community because it offers plenty for government officials and bean counters who want the proof that it saves lives, reduces the number of free-roaming cats, and saves money.

Be Seeing You, Randi

Randi was my longest lived Flatcoat.* She remained very active and healthy until just recently and I am thankful for that.* Yesterday, we had to make the singularly difficult decision to euthanize our beloved pet.* The emergency clinic placed her in a cardboard coffin for us to take home.* As always, we allow the other dogs to see the body of the dog who has died as it seems to help give them closure.* They have all been very anxious since Randi took a downward turn last week and we wanted them to know she is now at peace.* Our dogs typically spend a few moments sniffing the body of their friend then move along * except Patty.* She has stayed at the graveside of every dog who has died, keeping vigil until they are completely buried and we all go back inside. Watching Patty grieve for those who have passed helps me with my own grief.* Pets are family.

We love and miss you Randi.

Black hawk dog food

So I recently spent about an hour talking with a breeder in a pet super store after much deliberation she convinced me to put Alfie on a diet consisting solely of black hawk dry dog food, fish and potato. With the occasional treat of course.

Apparently what I've been feeding him has been all wrong lol,

Was just wondering if anyone has had experience with it?

Also, I'm totally in love with Alfie!

Word of the Day: vertiginous

mardi 30 décembre 2014

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 31, 2014 is:

vertiginous • \ver-TIJ-uh-nus\ • adjective

1 a : characterized by or suffering from vertigo or dizziness b : inclined to frequent and often pointless change : inconstant 2 : causing or tending to cause dizziness 3 : marked by turning

Examples:

As a window washer for some of the city's tallest skyscrapers, Victor had to quickly master working at vertiginous heights.

"The cheapest seat in the house—a perch in the vertiginous reaches of the upper balcony—would set me back $59." — Deanna Isaacs, Chicago Reader, December 3, 2014

Did you know?

Physicians began calling a patient's disordered state in which surroundings seem to whirl dizzily vertigo in the 15th century. Vertiginous, from the Latin vertiginosus, is the adjective form of vertigo, which in Latin means "a turning or whirling action." Both words descend from the Latin verb vertere, meaning "to turn." (Vertiginous and vertigo are just two of an almost dizzying array of vertere offspring, from adverse to vortex.) The "dizzying" sense of vertiginous is often used figuratively, as in this December 9th book recommendation by Thomas Mallon in The New York Times: "Marked by a piercing wit and vertiginous vocabulary, the book is a feat of emotional dexterity, shrewdly dispassionate and carefully felt."

Luxating patellas - Your experience

I'm starting to suspect that Squirt has a luxating patella in his right hind. He's started doing the telltale "skip" with that leg. I've always worried that he'd have some issues in his hind end somewhere since he's so cow-hocked and a structural nightmare. We have an appointment with our vet for next Tuesday and all drag work, etc. is on hold, so if it is the case I will update with the grade it is given and such.

What I'm looking for is personal experience with this. What grade was given? How limiting was it as far as mobility and exercise? Did it get significantly worse over time? Was surgery a valid option, was it effective if it was done?

Basically, I'm just freaking out. He's so young and it will be sad if he's limited for the rest of his life due to this. I'm really hoping that I'm jumping to early conclusions here.

Luxating patellas - Your experience

Hi everyone!

This is my first time to the pit bull chat forum. I have a 7-year old blue pit, male, terrified of water, very allergic, has skin tags, and is a spoiled baby and 88 lb. lap dog. He can clear the waiting room at the vet's office in 5 seconds flat!

Hi everyone!

Crate suggestions??

Hi all, this is my first time posting so my apologies if this is a repeat topic. I have a 2 1/2 yr old pit bull mix, with pit being the dominant. I have to crate him while I work and he has escaped the crate I had, it seemed pretty sturdy but within a few months he had ripped off or bent beyond repair all the bars from the cage door and it's useless now. Does anyone know of a brand that can with stand the strength of this beast? I love him dearly and my son would be heartbroken if I had to find a new home for him but I have had to keep him in the garage and he is dismantling the door jam. Need help ASAP! I live in a condo so there are no outside options.

Memphis Bans the Public from Giving Treats to Shelter Pets

Memphis Animal Services, which functions primarily as a pet killing facility and does not vaccinate all animals upon intake as per standard shelter best practices, is suddenly concerned that treats given to doomed dogs might compromise their health. As such, the public has been banned from giving out treats at the pound. This email is from La Sonya Harris Hall, Deputy Director of the Division of Parks & Neighborhoods in Memphis:

Subject: MAS takes precaution with pet treats

Good Morning Councilmembers:

As a precautionary measure and based on observations by Dr. Rebecca Coleman noted below, Memphis Animal Services has temporarily suspended visitors from providing treats to the animals in our care. We will research this matter over the holidays and develop a plan that will be in the best interest of the pets.

Recently MAS encountered a situation involving several dogs that were vomiting and experiencing diarrhea after they had been fed treats.* The partially eaten treats were found in each dog’s cage that became ill. Unfortunately no one was able to identify who gave the treats.* As there are multiple visitors to the shelter each day, some type of control needs to be in place to ensure that the health of the pets is not compromised.* Not knowing what a pet has been fed adds an element of complexity to treating the pet if complications arise.

The most basic*thing that could be done to protect the health of the animals at MAS is across the board vaccination upon intake. *That*s not being done.

Most of these animals are going into the dumpster, as fast as MAS can legally (?) put them there . But the city says there*s a risk of harm in the dogs receiving a bit of kindness from the public before being snuffed.

The biggest threat to the health of animals at MAS is Fatal Plus. *It*s got dog cookies*beat by a mile. *Can we get a ban on that?

No doubt everyone in this email has been researching this issue over the holidays and is developing a plan to protect the best interests of the pets. *Who are going out the back door in garbage bags by the truckload.

Well done as usual, Memphis.

Word of the Day: advertent

lundi 29 décembre 2014

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 30, 2014 is:

advertent • \ad-VER-tunt\ • adjective

: giving attention : heedful

Examples:

Marcia listened to everything I said with an advertent expression on her face, and then proceeded to tell me, point by point, why she disagreed with me.

The governor is still threatening to veto the bill, even though he is advertent to the strong public support for it.

Did you know?

You may be thinking that advertent should mean "intentional." After all, inadvertent means "unintentional." Take away the negative prefix in- and you're left with that word's opposite, right? If this is your line of thought, you're not entirely off base; the two words (which both entered English in the 17th century and derive from Latin advertere, meaning "to turn the mind or attention") are in fact closely linked. But inadvertent has another, older meaning: "inattentive" or "not focusing the mind on a matter." The established meaning of advertent falls opposite that older sense of inadvertent. Does this mean that advertent never means "intentional"? Not exactly. We have seen some evidence of this use, but it's not yet well enough established to be entered in our dictionaries.

Have read about it, though wondering just how common it is. A once confident Chance is becoming very fearful. 2 year old AmStaff leash reactive/separation anxiety/behavior issues

A little back story:

We adopted Odin our AmStaff when he was about 7 months old from a NJ shelter. He was mellow at first (later found out this was because he was sick with pneumonia), but once he was well and settled in we realized how high energy/high anxiety he was.

This is our first pit so we had no idea what to expect. We hired a professional dog trainer to help educate us on the best way to train Odin and help him become a well behaved dog.

She gave us some good tips and tricks and we did start to see improvement in his behavior, but he was still very anxious and excitable but we figure it was typical puppy behavior.

Flash forward to today:

Odin has just turned 2. After speaking with 2 separate vets and doing some research of our own, we decided to give Prozac a try to see if it would help curb some of Odins anxiety. (We had tried exercise/wearing him out but his energy level in relation to his anxiety never changed) He has made signifcant improvements in his separation anxiety - he's comfy in his crate and no longer barks and panics when we leave for work, but will still have some anxiety if either myself or my boyfriend leaves the apartment to run an errand. He does ok on his walks, still pulls, but the gentle leader has helped. And is resource guarding is pretty much gone (HUGE relief).

When Odin is home with just the 2 of us, he is the sweetest most mellow guy in the world. He just like to be lazy and lay on the couch. He obeys his commands - sit, stay, off, lay down, etc.

The issues we have are this:

1. Whenever we have guests over he FREAKS OUT. Barking, jumping, the whole nine yards. It's not aggresive, it's just over excited. As soon as the buzzer rings he stands at attention. Then he rushes the door when I try to let someone in. If they make it inside, he is just jumping and $#@!aulting them (with love of course - but no one wants a 60 pound dog on top of them). It takes him a solid 10-20 minutes to work through this insanity, then he is pretty much calm. Occasionally he will jump on the person throughout the rest of their stay.

We've tried 'claiming the space' and training him to respect the boundary around the door but it hasn't worked. He doesn't respond to physical correction (by that i mean the 'tsst' thing that Cesar Milan does and seems to work so well and every other dog but mine). We've tried off leash, on leash, pinch collar, gentle leader, high value treats - nothing seems to work.

2. Leash reactivity on walks - As soon as he sees another dog his ears are up, tail is up, and if I can't snap him out of it fast enough he was start thrashing around and lunging to get to the other dog because he wants to greet them. Again, not aggressive, just wayyyy over excited. Unfortunately with the pit stigma people see him and are terrified because he looks out of control and they think he is going to attack them and/or their dog (sadness ).

Can't walk past another dog without him reacting. Went to the park the other day and in the distance he saw another dog jumping around and playing - he went nuts. Barking, thrashing, would not respond to high value treats. Nothing seems to snap him out of his fixations. He doesn't understand how to properly meet another dog.

3. Separation anxiety outside the house - So like any other couple with a dog my boyfriend and I had hoped to enjoy taking him on walks together. The issue is, if we both walk him for some reason he thinks its ok to pull. Individually he doesn't really pull at all. The worst thing is if one of us needs to step away for a moment to grab coffee or stop into a store - he panics. Completely and totally panics. Whining and barking and pulling to get to the person who's gone inside. If we are not with him together he loses it. Treats do not distract him at all. Not even super stinky treats that are high value.

Long story short we still have a lot of issue with his leash reactivity, separation anxiety, and meeting of new people and animals.

We are trying everything we can think of but nothing seems to click with him. I just want to be able to have people come over and not have him freak out. It would also be great to be able to walk him past another dog and not have to fear he is going to lunge at them.

Any advice would be helpful!

“Discover the Scam” Hits Times Square

We recently started a campaign asking Discover to stop giving money to the deceptively named Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), an organization that paid $6 million to settle racketeering and bribery allegations and that a state attorney general opened an investigation of earlier this year. Discover has a credit card deal whereby it’ll pay about $1 million a year to HSUS.

Until Discover pulls its support for HSUS—which Bank of America has apparently done with a previous deal with HSUS—we are calling for consumers and businesses to boycott Discover. We are confident that it’s only a matter of time until Discover sees the light that giving money to an organization that manipulates and deceives Americans isn’t wise business policy. And we’re making sure more people learn about the scam that Discover is funding.

As of last weekend, we put up a set of billboards in Times Square alerting New Yorkers and holiday visitors to visit DiscoverTheScam.com and learn more about what’s going on. If you haven’t already, sign our petition to show your support for boycotting Discover until it drops HSUS.

4 month old cesar- aggressive?

Loss

I haven't been on the forums for a long time. I am surprised I remembered my log in info. I'm sad to say that what brings me back here is the loss of my precious Missy. On October 8, 2014 she passed away here at home at the age of 5 years old. She developed epilepsy over this past year and our vet suspects she finally suffered brain damage and/or a stroke. I don't want to go into details but she passed surrounded by all of us who loved her dearly.

I wanted to come back here to get some of the very first pictures I took of her and posted - I was so proud of her and I was so happy to feel a sense of community here on the forums, even though I didn't post much I enjoyed learning more and more about this breed everyday. I'm also grateful to those who have shared their experiences on here for all of us to see and to learn from.

Her passing came at an already very stressful time in my life and I feel guilty for not spending more time with her the past few months. I would even tell her that some nights; I would talk to her before I went to sleep about how much I love her, and that I'm sorry and how I promise I won't be so busy soon. I feel terrible about everything and I just wish I could have done something different. But I know she knew she was loved, all the way up until her last few minutes.

The rest of my life will be a little less bright.

Something Wicked This Way Comes...

Police Officer Fired after Standing Up to City Officials and Refusing to Shoot Loose

Walker Co, AL used to have a pound but the place closed a few years ago after it was exposed as a dog killing hole. *Since then, the city of Carbon Hill in Walker Co has apparently been trying to avoid the issue of homeless pets on the streets. *That brilliant plan did not work out for some reason and this month the city attempted to address the issue:

Carbon Hill City Councilor Billy Jenkins says the dog problem there is out of control, and people are complaining.

He thinks it’s time the city revisited an ordinance that was passed in 1991 but never enforced.

[…]

The ordinance references the responsibilities of a dogcatcher, but Carbon Hill Police say the city doesn’t have a dogcatcher and officers feel they’re being pressured to shoot strays because of Section 8 of the ordinance.

“It says the police department shall have the authority to destroy any stray domestic animal running at large within the city limits of the city. When in the opinion of the (Carbon Hill Police Department) such animal constitutes a public nuisance or is a danger or a menace to the life or health of the citizens of the city,” said Jenkins.

While Jenkins specifies that the city is not asking officers to shoot dogs on the streets, the police chief says*his department has no resources to catch and transport dogs, even if a new Walker Co shelter opens as planned next year. *He says lethal force against a dog is only a last resort:

“We just don’t go around firing our weapons off in town. You know I mean if our weapons are ever then it’s a threat to us or to someone else, you know someone’s life. We’re just not going to go out and shoot a dog for no reason just because it’s a stray,” said Chief Jason Richardson, Carbon Hill Police Department.

“Things have changed since 91 this is 2014 fixing to be 2015. There’s a lot of things changed. You just don’t go around, you don’t go around killing dogs,” said Richardson. “In my eyes that’s animal cruelty.”

Well say, that*s refreshing. *And it looks like the chief isn*t the only one with that attitude:

Carbon Hill*s mayor says alleged statements from city leaders that stray dogs should be shot to eliminate the problem are not true.

However, the city*s acting $#@!istant police chief tells*Alabama*s 13*city leaders did make such statements[.]

[…]

[A]cting $#@!istant police chief Johnathan Yerby says he notified city leaders last week that state law prevents officers from shooting stray dogs. A week later, he*s out of a job for what the city says is budget cuts, but Yerby says the timing is no coincidence.

“I was the one chosen to be laid off because I*m the one that stood up and printed out the state law and told them that we couldn*t shoot dogs,” Yerby explains.

The police chief is reportedly very upset at Yerby*s firing and*the mayor has no comment. *The mayor did however offer this greatly comforting reassurance:

“There ain*t going to be no dogs shot,” Mayor Chambers stresses.*“We*ll catch them and try to give them away, adopt them out, or do whatever we got to to please everybody.”

Sounds like a well thought out plan of action there. *I can*t imagine how it*s not going to succeed, especially when the police officers charged with the catching and the giving away or the doing whatever say they lack the resources for the job and now they*re down an officer. *Stay tuned for success, I guess.

(Thanks Clarice for the story.)

Although most French words are derived from Latin, a few result from the 3rd-century Germanic occupation of France, and the early French mareschal is one such word. Mareschal is related to Old High German marahscalc, formed by combining marah ("horse") and scalc ("servant"). Our marshal, which comes from mareschal, originally meant "a person in charge of the upkeep of horses" when it was borrowed into Middle English, but by the 13th century it described a high royal official as well. Eventually it came to have other meanings.

puppy won't walk when outside

Hello,

i have a 8 week old puppy that i picked up 2 days ago. He has been getting lots of attention, and i haven't really left his side yet, and he's willing to play with anyone he meets instantly, and seems to be doing well.

But when i try taking him on walks he will stop, pretty much within a couple feet of leaving. He sit, refuse to move, and making small occasional crying noises. I don't want to try dragging him because i feel like i shouldn't do that obviously.

I have a gated front yard where he is potty training in, and seems to be running around and exploring in more.

It has been cold outside (Chicago) so he shakes and tries hiding in my legs. But I'm starting to question if the shaking is because he is cold, or if he is scared of being outside. He does not do this indoors.

any tips to get him more excited about going on walks and exploring around the neighborhood. I was expecting him to be pulling on the leash

Also, Is 30 degrees too cold to play with him outside for a little?

Little Iron Annie Oakley

This little girl is a handful! She's got 5 X the energy that Hammer had. She's my next WP prospect and I think she's going to do great!

She's going to be 5 months on Jan 3rd and is a solid 30.4 lbs. I've done almost no "working out" with her except for a few flirt pole sessions.. like literally 3 short sessions. This body is all good genetics.

10 weeks old.

About 3 months

Thanks for looking. :D
