6 Month Old Rescue - Need Help with Biting

mardi 23 décembre 2014

We had been talking about getting a dog for a while, done some research, all of that, hadn't quite pulled the trigger, when a dog showed up at the soup kitchen we operate out of our church. My husband feeds her, falls in love with her, and asks me if we can bring her home. We go through all the proper channels, find out if anyone is looking for her, humane society, the vet, all that good stuff. She is now ours. We're about three weeks in. At first, she was exhausted, had worms, fleas, stuff like that. She can't bark, she's clearly had some abuse. This is our first dog, and she turns out to be a pit mix. We have no idea with what. She seemed like the most timid dog, but we knew that she should be a pretty energetic puppy, so we were expecting that. We also knew that, depending on what her previous experiences were, she could be aggressive. We've obviously been hoping that we can correct that. We have young kids.

We absolutely love this puppy, the vet said she's about six months old. And most of the time, she's really great. But then out of nowhere, she suddenly starts nipping, which we were expecting. But over the last few days, its been more like biting. Not enough to break skin, but enough to bruise. And it doesn't feel like playing, because she won't stop. She only really does it with me, but she did it a little with my husband last night. I try to walk away, and she follows me, biting my legs. I try redirecting her biting to a toy, and it doesn't work when it is the more intense kind.

We've just started feeding her out of those puzzle toy things to stimulate her a bit more. We've been a bit busier with work than we normally are, but we're still making sure to get her exercise, and are taking her out to walk a bit and throw a ball around and play, and stuff like that. We know that more of this would be good. She goes back for more shots in a couple of days, so we can take her for obedience training.

What can I do in the meantime? We really don't want to re-home her. We really love her, but with little kids, this is kind of frightening. If it was just my husband and I, patience would be no issue. Suggestions please?? (Sorry for the crazy long post... its my first one!)
