How to stop a dog from barking?

dimanche 21 décembre 2014

I have a 2 year old american staffy / boxer mix (got him 3 weeks ago from the SPCA). He gets a 1 hour, 1 mile walk twice a day. I use NILIF and he gets all his food in food dispensing toys. He has been taught speak/quiet/inside voice by the SPCA.

I live in a tiny, studio apartment with concrete walls and he BARKS at any little sound and his bark is painfully loud, I have headaches daily and I'm pretty sure I'm losing my hearing. He's been rewarded for barking in the past, was my understanding.

He barks when:

  • He hears someone in the hallway/outside

  • He sees people/dogs out the window (I'm on the 3rd floor)

  • He hears dogs on my computer (e.g. training videos)

  • Someone knows on my door

So far I have been ignoring it, shutting myself in the bathroom until he quiets down, etc. I don't make eye contact or even look in his direction. I never scold him for barking (since negative attention is still attention). I try to make noise when he does it to distract him (usually, making loud noises in another part of the apartment, or sonic whistles via the computer when he's really loud). It was working, but I think he figured out it was getting my attention and that when I make noises, I'm sort of paying attention to him. Once the barking trigger has stopped, he just straight up barks at me. Also, the noise distractions no longer get his attention and he just keeps barking. Once he's laid down, I give him a treat and tell him "Good Quiet".

I'm planning to try some de-sensitization training (e.g. use a treat, have someone knock on the door, if he doesn't bark, gets the treat, playing dog noises on the computer, etc.).

I don't want to get him a bark collar (spray or sonic whistle kind), but I think at this point I may have to! I don't like bark collars because barking is a normal behaviour for dogs and I don't want him to never bark, just not bark so much at any sound in the hallway / people walking by. I understand barking is a way he can communicate with me and I don't want to take that completely away. Plus, it just seems mean spirited in my opinion (maybe you guys can convince me otherwise). Lastly, there's always the chance it won't work or he'll outsmart it.

I'm pretty sure he's quiet when I'm not here, but I can't confirm it until I have a camera set up to watch him during the day. It honestly makes me not want chill out at home with him.

I've already had 1 person complain because he barks when they come home. Don't even get me started because I think it's a petty and stupid complaint for being in a dog building: it's not like the person is hanging out in the hallway! They come home, he barks, they unlock their door and go inside their apartment, he quiets down. He just sounds scary, which I can appreciate it, but he's completely contained in my apartment. If anyone can shed a different point of view, would love to hear it (done ranting).
