I got my puppy very young and the previous owner was feeding the puppies puppy chow, so I continued to do the same. I know it was not the best kibble available,so I began do research on what better options were available. The vet says it is okay to switch her gradually over the course of about two weeks to a month.
Although I had been reading about all different kinds of kibble I never checked the ingredients of the puppy chow she was eating, today I looked and noticed it is made out of corn, corn, and more corn! I was thinking about switching to Rachael Ray Nutrish Zero Grain. It is a much better ingredients list, and meets AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages. The first three ingredients are: Turkey, Turkey Meal, and Chicken Meal.
We feed our cat Rachael Ray wet and dry food and she loves it and I like that the wet food has nice pieces of meat in there instead of a gravy looking slop I have seen from other brands. I am also in a hurry to switch because I feel like my puppy isn't getting enough food. The bag recommends about 3/4 cup of food per day for her and she eats over a cup per day and she is not growing much. I can see her ribs (they are not really poking out but I feel she should have some more fat on her at this age). Last week at the vet she was 4.8 pounds at 6 weeks old.
I plan to also feed wet food a few times per week but the main source I prefer to keep as kibble for the convenience. I cannot get some of the great prices some of you all get for raw meats either so I won't be going that route either.
