We have a 9 month old Pitt bull that has never shown any kind of aggression. However yesterday a maintenance team left our fence gate open and he escaped at no fault of our own. The result was one dead Maltese and it's sibling injured. It was all a freak accident but we don't know what to do as a result. We weren't there when it happened and only heard of the event after speaking to a police officer. We imagine he just wanted to play and got a little too rough (we have a husky mix and they always play rough but never violent). All we can think is the Maltese fought back when he was trying to play and then he just attacked from there. We have taken him into the vet and Petsmart with no issues whatsoever and everyone has commented on how sweet he is and how the breed is misunderstood. Should we consider putting him down if given the option? This just happened last night and we are still waiting to see our options. The police officer understood we were not negligent by any means. We just don't know what to do. I don't know how I am going to explain this to my toddlers. Please help.
