Breaking up a dog fight alone?

vendredi 23 janvier 2015

My dog got attacked by YET ANOTHER off leash DA dog a few days ago while we were walking. Luckily the owner was right behind him (he got out of the house, apparently) and was able to grab his dog and get him under control so I could get mine away and back home. But not before mine got bit twice on the face. This has happened four times so far with different dogs. So far either the owners or some neighbors have been around to help break it up, but I'm really paranoid it'll happen again and no one will be around to help me. I'd like to try upping my walks to twice a day to get my dog more exercise, but I'm scared of this happening. I'd like to go for walks in the local park too, but I keep hearing about loose or stray dogs hanging around there too. On some of those trails there's not a soul back there, so I'm worried about encountering a loose DA dog back there alone too.

So far my dog has been more interested in trying to get away from the other dog than fighting back, and only snapped at this one once. I do have a break stick and have practiced using it the best I can in case she decides to bite and hold on.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do if a dog comes after my dog and no one is around to help? Of the dogs so far two were bully mixes, one was a jack russell looking terrier, and one was a big GSD mix which I would be terrified of trying to get him off my dog if I was alone. He was bigger than I was. Is there a place to grab onto a dog where they're less likely to redirect and bite me, or anything like that? If I'm walking and a dog keeps coming after mine and won't go away, what should I do? My dad has a small keychain can of mace he lets me borrow, but the one time I decided to actually use it the dog (the GSD) didn't even care that I sprayed him and kept coming. I'd just like to be able to be prepared for the worst and have some peace of mind so I don't have to be paranoid about walking my dog.
