Male House Mates Fighting

mercredi 21 janvier 2015

Hi all, I am new to the forum and looking for advice on two male housemates fighting and not getting along. We have a total of four dogs, our oldest who we have had longest moagli who is 4, missy is about 4 also (we found her on the side of the road thinking she was an emaciated puppy, turned out to be pregnant and give birth to 8) Knubs is a male and one of missy's puppies who is now 2, and bren who is also one of missy puppies but had always been the dominant one of the litter, also 2.

Since bren was the largest male of the litter, he has always exhibited a bit of aggressive behavior toward other animals, and always bullied the other males of the litter. On a few separate occasions they he would start to fight them so badly that it drew blood. These other puppies never wanted to fight and would immediately cower down to Bren while he would attack them. Fast forward, and Bren is now 2 and has not been bullied or been in a fight since his housemate and liter mate Knubs was fixed, although Bren & Moagli are not fixed. Bren and Moagli would get along for the most part, Bren was accepting the fact that Moagli was "top dog". The only time bren would ever growl or act uneasy is when Moagli would lick his weiner (not sure why they do this)

The past week or so Bren was not really wanting to be in Moagli's presence. He would growl at him and stare whenever he was in the same room as him. We are not sure what provoked or started this, but after about 4 or 5 days of this behavior they would be on the brink of a fight and we would have to keep them separated. My husband went out of town for 2 days and the entire time they were separated for the most part, but still could see and smell eachother.

When my husband returned from out of town, literally 30 mins after arriving home he sat on the couch and we had all of the dogs out together. he was petting bren and moagli at the same time when moagli went to lick Bren's weiner. As soon as he did that Bren started viciously attacking him, latching on to his head, neck, ears, and front legs and shaking profusely. This went on for about 30 mins or so and was almost impossible to break up. Moagli had many injuries, was bleeding a lot, and had to get 10 staples and 5 drainage tubes. His ear was nearly torn off and he had holes all over. Bren did have a few bites but was over all fine compared to moagli.

Since then we have kept them separated not only because moagli is in bad shape but bren also growls and goes insane any time he is in the same room as him (bren is kenneled, and the kennel is covered with a blanket). We have an appointment to get Bren neutered, and also got a heavy duty capped mouth muzzle, but I am scared because I never want this to happen again and I want them to get along.

Has anyone else had this type of situation happen? What can I do to keep my dogs living in the same house, but peacefully? Anything helps! Thanks
