Reintroductions after a fight (a little history beforehand)

vendredi 2 janvier 2015

Hello all,

Back in October, my husband picked a stray male, intact pittie who was hiding underneath cars on a busy highway. We took him to animal control so the owners would have chance to reclaim him, after dropping him off we knew that if he was not reclaimed, we were going to rescue him. 2 days before we were set to adopt him, we received a call that he had been exposed to Parvo, and that if we did not come get him he would be euthanized. We of course went and got him, took him to the vet after waiting through the 14 day incubation period to p$#@!. He never broke with Parvo, but he did have Kennel cough, hookworms, roundworms and Heartworms. All of which we have addressed, even the costly Heartworm treatment and we got him neutered.

We already had a 10 year old, spayed female Guinness, and a 5 year old spayed female Sookie. They get along pretty well, with the occasional opportunity for an attitude adjustment. Upon introducing them initially, we found he and Guinness got along very well, cleaning each others faces, snuggling up together, etc. Sookie on the other hand wanted NOTHING to do with him, she would growl anytime he came near her, especially if she was sitting near my husband or myself. Or if any valuable resources were in possession.

I won't lie, there have been a few occasions where some squabbles have broken out, mostly air-snapping and lots of noise. We have never done this before, so it has really been trial by fire. I know that is not the best way. They are always instigated by either Chewie(our rescue) or Sookie. It's usually Chewie and Sookie , and on a few occasion it has been Chewie on Guinness(And Guinness is such a calm, peaceful dog that she just looks at him as if to say "What is your problem?")

SOOO, On Christmas night I took everyone out for one last potty break before bed time . Everything was fine, Sookie and Chewie even began playfully running along side one another, which I thought was more positive progress( they had finally begun to be comfortable laying next to one another, and giving each other quick licks on the face), the next thing I knew they were fighting! It was terrifying, and my heart just sank. At first glance I though he had really hurt Sookie, she is so pale and white that is always looks worse than it is. She did have some scratches and scrapes.

I already know that we have to either commit to giving them what they need(more bonding with us individually, more obedience, more exercise) and being more responsible. Or we will have to re-home Chewie. Which I really don't want to do, but I can't have them tearing each other apart. But I also don't want Sookie running the show, because I'm the pack leader darnit!

My first plan is to reintroduce them after Chewie has finished his next 60 days of heartworm treatment, during which he will not bee feeling well in general and on strict confinement. During those 60 days,my husband and I planned to give the girls more exercise and obedience training.

I am basically looking for some advice and outside critique on what exactly is going on with them, because I can only see them through my filter.

Thank you...
