I posted in the past about my decision not to get a pit bull after lurking on this forum (NOT due to any dislike of the breed, but simply because they don't fit my lifestyle and I don't want to create a bad situation for a dog.)
As chance would have it, I'm going to be fostering an adult pit bull for a few days. Her previous arrangement fell through at the last moment and no one else has room for her. Our local shelter is terrible and kills anything that remotely resembles a pit, so she can't go there. The rescue group I foster for is shuffling dogs around and should be able to find a longer term foster within the week.
By all reports this dog is a lovely, stable girl who has shown no signs of aggression. Her owner was an older man who died unexpectedly and the family refused to take her (so she's been in one home most of her life and not in and out of shelters.) I don't expect to have any issues with her.
Still...one of concerns about having pits is the fact that I have blind cats and an elderly mother with cognitive thinking issues. I'm going to be keeping them entirely separated, with the dog downstairs behind a closed door (and in a crate when unsupervised) and the cats upstairs behind two closed doors. Even so, I worry that my mother will forget why the doors are closed and will let someone out. So finally, my question...is it a bad idea to lock the doors whenever I'm not right there? My worry is that something might happen (I don't know...a housefire or something) and she won't be able to access the animals to help them. Should I talk with the neighbors and see if they'll accept a copy of the keys just in case? What's the safest way for me to ensure my mother doesn't have a chance to make a mistake? If any of you have kids in the home, how do you deal with that risk? In reality I'll probably be home the vast majority of the time, so I'm really just concerned about what happens if I need to run to the store or anything.
This dog previously lived with a cat without any issues , but I refuse to take any chances

Safe to lock a dog in a room?
