I'm going to be honest-- I am not a fan of dogs. I was bitten by a large black lab when I was a kid and in the years that followed, I grew to fear and resent dogs, perhaps none more so than APBTs. I would look in the news at all of the stories about pitbulls attacking children and wonder why the breeds that seemed most prone to violence weren't just forced into extinction, as I thought it was clear they were genetically flawed beyond redemption (it should come as no surprise that I fully supported BSL). Then I googled "pitbull forum" to see what delusional garbage was being posted about it being ~*~the deed, not the breed!*~* and found myself instead reading responsible pitbull owners' firsthand accounts of how they train and regard their animals. I was surprised by the strong support to euthanize any dog that displayed aggression towards people, and the resounding demand within the community for owners to be accountable for their pets and realistic in their expectations of their pets' aggression toward other animals. I've realized I've demonized these dogs and their supporters to an unfair extent, and hope that I will be allowed to continue to quietly observe the community. I truly admire what you all are doing, and hope that my post, if nothing else, will serve as a reminder that the uphill battle you're all fighting to save these dogs' reputations isn't one without meaning or impact.
