My pup has made me sooo proud so far during his basic manners cl$#@!... until the cl$#@! last night. He was distracted 99% of the time and performed the obedience maneuvers from not very good to downright failure. Up until now, I've felt like I've done a good job training him. I just couldn't get him to stay focused at all last night.
He is starting to get hormonal. Do you think that is why he was distracted or why he was stubborned? Do you have to work that much harder/more often as they become hormonal?
I'm also a little surprised at how old-fashioned the AKC training still is....telling me to use choke chain correction (with pinch collars, no less) and telling me to whack him on the nose, etc. Now, I know some people will not take issue with this and I'm not sure where I stand on it with all the information about only positive reinforcement, etc. I am just surprised they haven't started introducing more of the positive training methods used nowadays. Of course, those old-fashioned ways certainly worked/work. Just interesting. I also thought pinch collars aren't supposed to be snapped like choke chains. They sanction and sell the pinch collars, by the way.
Thanks for input on why he might have flunked last night and how to keep him progressing.
