Training Roommates?

vendredi 26 septembre 2014

Unfortunately I had to put down my boy a few weeks ago & am working towards a new puppy. My biggest concern at this point is that I live in a household with four other dogs & four other people. Unfortunately I typically work six twelve hour shifts consecutively, then have eight days at home. To some extent I'm going to need to rely on my roommates, who are thrilled at the idea of a new puppy in the house, to care for the animal while I am working long hours. I will have time before & after my shift to interact with the new pup, but then I'm off to work & have to sleep sometime.

However, they tend to be very lackadaisical when it comes to the training of their own animals & I don't want their bad behaviors & the bad behaviors of their animals to adversely impact my new pup. For example, in the morning we do a group feeding with all the dogs being fed at the same time. While my boy had been trained to "down" next to his mat while I prepared his food the other dogs prance/whine/bark/jump while their food is being prepared. I can feed & walk before & after I work, but the dog will need to be toileted at some point in between & they have a terrible habit of letting the dogs run wild in the enclosure, don't insist on a sit or a release command before they can leave to the enclosure & their dogs aren't terribly compliant with a recall command.

The long & the short of it is that I want to be able to mold this pup appropriately, but am concerned with the length of time I'll have to keep him sequestered without me present while working in order to shield him from their influence. Even if it were feasible to keep him crated for thirteen hours I know my roommates would see it as "cruel & unusual" & would probably jailbreak him for a poorly supervised carouse with the other dogs as soon as I was gone.

What kind of system & ground rules can I put in place that can ensure the safety & proper training of a new pup without entirely cutting everyone else off from enjoying him?
