Hello! I have a 2 year old female pit that I got when she was 6 months old. She had not been socialized properly and was very skittish with other animals and people. She has come a very long way from that puppy but still has issues with other dogs. I do have another pit bull that has been in the home since we brought her home and she is fine with her it is just other dogs. We have family that has a resort in Arkansas that we go to every year that allows dogs but specifically states they must be leashed and attended at all times they are outside of the cabin. My sister in laws brother whom lives in Arkansas but not on the resort has a lab that he refuses to put on a leash and says "he has free roam of the place". When we arrived there (we live in Illinois) last month my husband went right up to him and told him that Keta was with us and reminded him that she doesn't get along well with other dogs. This is not new to him....we have been there before with her. He once again stated his dog would have free roam of the place. So, my husband again said she doesn't get along well with other dogs and you know this so I want to let you know that she is here with us. A few days later in the morning I wanted to take both dogs down by the lake for exercise before the days activities began. As I was taking them around the back side of the cabins (so we wouldn't be in the main area where people walk) I see this brown spot come running around the side of a cabin! Both dogs immediately looked in the direction of the lab and I tugged their leashes towards the lake to redirect them (like they have been trained...and I was so impressed with Keta because she started to redirect). The lab then took a couple more steps towards my dogs and my oldest growled (which was shocking because she never does that...I think she's getting grumpy in her old age) and then it was on! Keta had a harness on and started jumping and flailing around trying to get to this dog! Nobody was with this lab to move him on! Nobody was around! Keta slipped her harness and ran to the dog and grabbed him by his ear and pulled him to the ground and held him there! I let go of my other dogs leash (who ran back to the cabin to my husband) and I jumped on top of Keta. I know that wasn't a good idea but I was not going to let my dog try to seriously injure another (which I don't know if she would because she's never been in an altercation before now). She never bit multiple times. She just grabbed grabbed the dog and held him to the ground. My brother in law (my husband's brother) ran out of his cabin and tried to grab the lab. The lab started biting everyone! He ended up having to go to the hospital for 10 puncture wounds to his right hand and forearm. I got bit on my shoulder. He had two rabies shots in each wound! Ouch! My husband grabbed Keta and took her to the cabin and she was shaking like like a leaf! I cleaned her off to make sure she didn't have injuries....she didnt. The other dog didn't have any injuries either. But...of course it was my dogs fault! The owner never said anything about it being Keta ' s full but my sister in law did. I would $#@!ume it is because it was her brothers dog and she wants to protect her brother. That being said we finished out the week and went home. I then find out that the lab was 6 months behind on his rabies vaccination! Now my brother in law is saying that his hospital bill was $10,000 and they are wanting to investigate so the can get their money back from the person at fault. He says "I'm trying not to mention Keta because she Is a pit bull and they might put her down"! We followed all rules! He didn't! I have not been contacted by anyone. And It is on record that the lab bit a person person and animal control did quarantine the lab for 10 days because of no rabies vaccination! Any advice? Has anyone been in a similar situatuin?
