MAYS LANDING, N.J. --

A New Jersey man who beat a dog to death earlier this year is now headed to jail.

Atlantic County prosecutors say 51-year-old Steven Geisel of Egg Harbor Township received a 364-day county jail term when he was sentenced Friday. He also will have to serve two years of probation, pay restitution and perform 30 days of community service at the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The 51-year-old Geisel pleaded guilty last month to animal cruelty charges stemming from the death of the female pit bull. Officials have said the 2-year-old dog named Bella was beaten in the neck and head with a blunt object in a wooded area of Egg Harbor in January.

Authorities have not said why Geisel attacked the dog. He was arrested shortly after the attack occurred following an investigation by Egg Harbor police and the Atlantic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and has been held at the county jail on $10,000 bail since.

The amount of restitution Geisel will have to pay has not yet been determined.

Two other dogs living with Geisel and his relatives were removed from his residence following the attack, authorities have said.
