Hello all. My significant other and I are huge Pit Bull lovers. We recently adopted a special one from a rescue. He is 1 years old and the sweetest thing in the world. He follows me everywhere and licks me to death. He was found when he was about 2 months old.. with his eyeball hanging out... on the side of the road. Thanks to the help of some special people, they were able to get a vet to sew his eye back in and take care of him until we came along and fell in love with him. Someone with children adopted him before us, but they returned him to the rescue due to him nipping the children (accidentally while playing). He really is very sweet. The one concern we have is that is very protective when he is with me. I am female, and he is very good with other human females, but when males approach me (my nice neighbor, the friendly guy working on our fence) he gets very aggressive. I always have him on a leash when outside of the house and he lunges at these guys and growls at them in a very menacing manner. I have to pull him back on his leash. He listens quite well and when I tell him to stop, he does... but he does not give these guys a chance. I have tried standing between them and my dog (Stryder) and he still is very un-trusting of them and aggressive. It is very scary for them and I would hate for him to bite someone. He is part of our family, we are not taking him back to the rescue like the previous owners... we are just wanting to know what we can do to nip this (no pun intended) in the bud before it gets worse. We are more than willing to put in the effort and training to socialize him and help him trust others.
