Ok...I have a predicament.
I'm getting my pup on Friday. He will be a tad over 8 weeks old and will already have his first round of vaccines(received at 6 weeks).
I have read so many conflicting statements on whether or not let them him in the yard, and at what point in his vaccine series he is safe outside. I will not be taking him to dog parks, public walking trails, pet stores etc until he is well past his 3rd round I'm just concerred with my backyard. I am unsure if there were any recent(last 3-5) years parvo cases in the yard... as I just purchased my house in May. I have one dog at the house now. An up to date, 9 year old German Shepherd.
I have read many articles stating to spray my yard with a dilute bleach mixture. Though I'm a little hesitant as putting bleach on my yard just seems like a bad idea. I would be using a 1:32 ratio, so not powerful... but still.
If I do decide to bleach the yard, I'm going to fence off a smaller area and enclose it. Bleach the hell out of the enclosed area, and just let him do his business inside this area for a few weeks until he's through the whole series of vaccines and in the clear.
I'm only concerned because I refuse to train him to piss/$#@! on a puppy pad.. until he's in the clear... just to keep him out of the gr$#@!. To turn around and 4 weeks later retrain him to do it outside. I kennel train, which significantly increases potty training time, and this is precious time I refuse to just keep him inside during.
I have no reason to believe the yard has parvo in the soil. And I would limit his gr$#@! exposure obviously until he's clear.. but I don't want to take ANY chances. Especially since I can't be sure of the previous owners dog situation.
Any advice is very appreciated.
