Breakthrough During Play Time

jeudi 16 octobre 2014

My girl Zoe is about 7 months now and plays well with other dogs. When playing with gentle dogs, she plays back gentle and friendly. My only issue with her play so far has been how rough she can get with other high intensity dogs who like playing rough. To me it seems like puppy play, just really rough as there is never any yelping, but alot of play biting and holding the loose skin around the neck.

Lately I have been going to a fenced ball diamond with a neighbour the past week and we let our dogs run around and play off leash. His is a Rottweiler/jack Russel mix (i know it's a strange mix) but it's short, stocky, strong, and full of energy. But whenever they play it's just a wrestling match at our feet. I have been getting tired of it as it does get pretty rough and the biting and holding is a concern to me. So every time she starts holding it's game over for a few minutes and she must sit and stay until she calms. When I release her she's right back at the dog and within a minute or so she's biting and holding again. Needless to say most of the time during our play sessions she is in a sit and stay time out.

So this has been going on for a few days now. Over and over and over. I was starting to get frustrated with her on the inside as my efforts to correct the behaviour weren't working.

But then yesterday we had a breakthrough.......

I had just released her from a time out and she went straight after the other dog, but this time instead of just bowling into him with her chest she dodged off to the side at the last second and just whipped right passed him. The other dog immediately gave chase to her and she started ducking and weaving and running faster than I have ever seen her go before. I have never seen her move like this before the way she was dipping and dodging as the other dog chased her. I could tell she was absolutely loving it. This went on for the rest of the play session. I was smiling ear to ear watching and was really happy to see her play like that. I was happier than she was I think.

Today we went back and at first they were playing really rough like usual, but after a few time outs she figured it out again and it was long session of chasing and running. She's learning...finally!

I just wanted to share because I was pretty happy to see this.
