Sorry for all of the questions, guys. You've all been great. I'm a first time pit owner, so I have lots of questions and concerns. I've also had HA dog before that I had to get rid of so I'm super paranoid about any type of aggression towards people.
Scully loves everyone and greets people much better lately (Shes a rescue that I've had about 2 months, and shes 8 months old. she used to be more timid at first but shes opened up). But sometimes she growls at people and its freaking me out. Its always on stairs, when they are coming down them. Its happened twice in the last month. Tonight our neighbor (who Scully has met before and likes a lot) was coming down the stairs towards us (wearing a beanie and big hoodie, which she doesn't normally wear) as we were about to come up and Scully started growling. But after a few seconds her tail was wagging and then she went up and greeted the girl and started licking her (her hackles weren't raised at all, which I've noticed does happen when she growls back at a dog when its being impolite when we walk past).
What gives?? It happened so fast I didn't have time to really react in any way. What should I do if I'm in a situation and my dog growls at a person? How can I prevent it? My instinct is to practice people coming up and down the stairs and give her treats whenever she doesn't growl? Or to start rewarding her with treats when she meets people?
I've also enrolled her in Bravo!Pup training cl$#@! in the Bay Area (I'm in california) and they start next weekend. So I'll ask my trainer then, but I don't want to wait that long to work on the issue.
