Hi to all!!!
I want your thoughts on how Kimba is doing after two nights that we left her on a Kennel.
This is going to be long, brace yourselves, here goes the situation.
We have been looking for a way to leave Kimba with somebody secure if we want to leave the city (or country) for a couple of weeks, she is three and a half an very reactive to dogs and plenty of prey drive when a squirrel or cat or even a bird p$#@! by (or just stand within range), all our holidays the last few years have been within driving distance and hotels or B&B or renting summer houses pet friendly, sooooo...we will like to be able to go somewhere warm during the winter (10 to 14 days).
So far it*s been impossible to find a person that is dog savvy to take care of her in a secure manner, a few weeks ago doing some research I found this great place not far away from home, the owner of the kennel is a known breeder (German shepherd) for like 20 or 30 years, we went to visit a few weeks ago with Kimba, the place is great and one can put the dog in what they call a “condo” a small space for every individual dog with no visual contact with other dogs or those big pens outside protected from sun and rain, the place is super clean, the people seem (are) very knowledgeable, never contact between two dogs, 3 periods of 10 minutes walk outside every day in a big enclosed area with things like a obstacle course for the dogs to play with the supervision and interaction with one employee, and we took an extra ½ hour playing time on top of that ( they also have an equivalent inside in case of rain or winter extreme cold).
This is not cheap but if it works is good for us, I tell my wife imagine if we had kids and have to pay for college education and all that (we don*t have kids) if we factor all of that this “summer camp” for Kimba is nothing, we can afford it.
So this week we decided to run a test for 2 days to see how she reacts and to have her used to that before we take a chance to go for a longer period, we booked a little holiday at Niagara Falls, I called every day to see how she was doing and everything was OK.
Yesterday when we picked her up the people there tell me “oohhh! she is a handful and a jumper” and tell me she is so active and so good in the playground she should put her in obstacle course or something (now I*m searching in the area) they told me that during part of the day they put her in the big pens so she have more space but with other dogs in sight but not adjacent to her, she would bark some or not at all after a while.
When we picked her up she was all wiggly and happy, tail up etc.
but since yesterday evening and today she is very quiet at home, not barking at dogs passing close to windows, has not asked to go out or come pocking at us for playing or anything like that, which is not her normal self.
What can it be? Could it be something wrong? What could it be if we let her there for 2 weeks?
We certainly wouldn*t do anything that can damage her mentally in the future.
Thanks for your ideas and excuse me this long and detailed post.
