Would someone be able to give me some training advice for the following:
Test 8: Reaction to another dog
This test demonstrates that the dog can behave politely around other dogs. Two handlers and their dogs approach each other from a distance of about 20 feet, stop, shake hands and exchange pleasantries, and continue on for about 10 feet. The dogs should show no more than casual interest in each other. Neither dog should go to the other dog or its handler.
I have a 7 mo old Amstaff. He has completed puppy training and has just now AKC Basic Manners. He really struggles when other dogs are around--because he wants to see them and play with them. He shows no aggression or fearfulness and doesn't bark, growl, or bite at anybody or anything. We had taken him to the dog park 3 times a couple of months ago (I know this is a bad thing and we don't go anymore) and he played really well with all other dogs--albeit he would get right in the face of some dogs that really weren't happy about it. He will play hard and play until he would have a heart attack. I became uncomfortable going and have no intention of going back.
He does pretty well when I walk him around the neighborhood and we are just walking past other dogs (I tell him to "leave it"). I take him to Petsmart sometimes and he does so-so. I don't like going there--its boring and I spend $$. But, in cl$#@! he is VERY excited around the other dogs. looses focus and I don't know how to help him. We also go to a people park 3-4 times a week and there are lots of other dogs there and he behaves the same way. Some of them are off-leash and come up to us, and that makes it worse. They are not supposed to be off leash. I can hardly hold onto him now at 50#s unless I keep a pinch collar on him and I hate him pulling so much even on a pinch collar. Leave it does almost zero good in these circumstances (cl$#@! and out in the people park). I have used a air-can (like you clean your computer keyboard) and it does some good.
Please give me some training instructions as this is the only part of the CGC test that I know we are going to struggle to p$#@!. Everything else with more time and training should be fine. Plus, I just want him to get through this over excitement part when we encounter other dogs so we can enjoy going to the people park.
Thank you.
