I've done some research here and read up on the DA threads and how it is natural in the APBT breed. Just looking for some thoughts/advice. In our case, our pit seems like she was almost trained to attack.
We rescued our pit a year ago, background here: Hello from NYC!!
Basically, it seems like she only is aggressive when specifically prompted. We have two other dogs, we've had for years. They're older (8 & 11) and both heeler mixes. When we first found and realized she'd be in our home for awhile we took a long time introducing her to our other dogs. We kept her in a separate room, gradually let them sniff under the door and started taking them on walks together. It didn't take long for them to start getting along. Our older dogs have lived together for about 7 years and love to play with each other but don't really like playing with her as she's much stronger and plays rougher and they can be a bit grumpy. She'll get excited and lick them, try to play and jump around. Usually they just ignore her or at worst, growl and show teeth. She's big, goofy and aloof and never even pays attention to this. She's never responded to or acknowledged their warnings. They sleep in bed together and she tries to cuddle with them, she doesn't get mad when they lay on her, step on her. She has no food aggression whatsoever. She's never shown absolutely any DA to them.
Except..and in the past year, this has happened exactly three times with our bigger dog, which is about her size but much lighter. If for some reason I grab his collar and try to calm him down, she takes it as a sign to attack. She's not mad. She doesn't growl or show teeth. She quietly walks up to him, jumps on his back latches on to his ear or scruff on the back of his neck. It seems to have nothing to do with being angry or upset with anything. That motion just seems to trigger the attack function in her. Obviously I try not to do this. It hasn't happened since January. Last night a gl$#@! fell off the table and broke. My girlfriend was in the middle of cleaning it when I opened the bedroom door and the one dog tried to run out, I didn't want him to walk into the gl$#@! so I grabbed his collar to hold him. Sure enough, she trotted over and jumped on his back and latched on. She doesn't bite, continuously, just holds and has only drawn blood once. I pull them apart pretty quick as she seems fairly receptive to my commands and me pulling her off (i know that's not always the right way but it's worked) and she has no aggression and has never tried to start it up after they're back together.
I didn't see anything specifically like this that I could find on here. Wonder if anyone else has had any experience with this or maybe it's just normal behavior? or something they're specifically trained to do? Our vet thinks she may have been used in fighting/bait dog with all her scars.
Any thoughts or advice on training is appreciated.
Thanks
