So this is something I've been struggling with for months with Piggy. She passed her second "advanced" obedience program a couple of months ago, and my trainer's one note was that she has extremely slow reaction times after a command is given, and it's really apparent. For example, we work on automatic sits a lot, and while she understands the concept completely, it sometimes takes up to 5-10 seconds for her to actually sit after we've stopped walking. That probably doesn't sound like a lot but it really is when we're going through a set of commands and it takes her this long to do it before we can move on.
Any time I give her a command, whether it is verbal or a hand signal, it's like she doesn't register it for 3-5 seconds. It has nothing to do with distractions; it's the same whether we're inside or out, in a busy area or not. Sometimes she'll look up at me, other times she'll just stare straight ahead, but I've rarely ever gotten an automatic response from her. It also doesn't seem to matter whether there are treats involved or not. I rarely give treats for basic commands other than recall, but I will every once in a while just to keep them motivated. Even if she knows I have treats on me it doesn't make her react quicker.
Is this stubbornness? Or is she just out to lunch while we're training? She will always end up doing what I've asked, I'd just really like to speed up her reaction time.
